Depends on what I'm up to. If I'm packed/showered and ready, then check schedule at the same time I'd normally leave for a report at the end of the 2-hour window. If I'm doing yard work (more likely), check maybe 30 minutes earlier than my normal go-time. Idea being to preserve both the non-placement of a rotation in those 2 hours, and my comfort level for a responsible report.

The first part is how the company views assigning reports that are in the NC window. The second part is more just how scheduling is messing up other parts of the process. They’ve threatened people with CPO involvement for not being immediately available after then schedule check but I’ve not heard of anyone actually getting in trouble.

Their version is "we'll hold the plane for you, you're marked notified, have a nice day", click.

Fair enough. I think we're saying the same thing. SC 2-hour non-contactable is PWA-safe, has certain advantages for all (not just commuting) pilots, and the company can and often does screw it up.

At the same time, there ARE (unlikely but possible) ways that a pilot can screw it up as I mentioned (not checking their schedule properly) that are also worth pointing out.

For me, I actually don't want to be NC'able too long into my SC stint, as frankly i'd rather be back on a nebulous promptly-available status. I figure as an in-base guy, you drop NC when you're assigned SC the previous day, then from that time until the next day right at your SC start, it in theory prevents CS from dropping a trip on you in the first two hours. Then the next day once SC starts, check your sked in ICrew and you're back on promptly avail and are no longer on the hook to be there right at two hours after the start of your SC.

I think a better way to put it, is if you invoke NC, and then self-check your schedule 1:59 into your SC, the earliest you have to report is 3:59 into your SC, vice 2:00. Is this correct, in practice?

This is a bad technique unless you are ready for immediate report at that 1:59 check. If you are ready for immediate report (I.e. in the airport) for what you find at that 1:59 check, then it’s fine.

If you check your sked at 1:59 into your first 2 hours of NC, then you are responsible for a potential report in 1 minute. Checking your sked in ICrew while NC'able doesn't start a moving two hour report window from the time of checking.

I do want to point out that I do not believe this is true, as evidenced by this thread. Lots of folks don't know the nuances of SC 2-hour non-contactable.

This is a valid and effective technique. Sometimes it matters, most often it doesn't, but I've seen GS go out that would have otherwise been assigned to me in my NC window.
