It was weird because they didn't give me SC on my first day of LC (although they eventually did during the normal prior-day assignments), even though my YS included the first day of LC as well.

In other words, my YS spanned several LC days, but I was awarded SC on my 2nd day of LC many days prior to getting SC on my 1st day of LC. This may be because the published SC open time is typically for 2-day bucket, and that's what the early award was for.

As for 2-hour non-contactable, I'm still getting the notes correctly, and was able to apply it to all assigned SC's at the same time.
I never ever put in a SC bid for anything other than the next day. There’s too much randomness still with awarding further out SC and it’s generally better to tactically see where you stand for the next day to pick the most advantageous SC time (assuming you’ve got some seniority to work with).

I do not disagree, and believe your strategy is a good one. My point is that for the better part of a year I have put YS in for SC that cover all of my LC stretches, and this week was the first time I’ve seen this phenomenon of a YS awarding SC more than a day in the future. I understand that it was always possible, but this is the first I’ve actually seen it.

I will likely tighten up my YS going forward.

I know other people who have gotten some surprise awards more than 1 day out, so it’s not necessarily a new thing. Again, the whole SC bidding process is messed up and irregular. At least the next day award process is a little better, although it is still nebulous as to what order it tries to assign the various start times. This is also why, as someone with decent reserve seniority, I only ever bid for the single start time I want. I don’t trust the process if I layer multiple requests. Junior folks are more hosed as they may have to put in multiple start times since they may not be able to hold their first choice.

The contract is clear (to us)… but unclear enough that the company interpreted that their priority level for each short call period takes precedence over pilot YS request.

Would someone explain to me like I'm 5 years old what the benefit of doing the two hours non-contactable thing is? I know the idea is that it allows you to commute in during the first two hours of your SC window, but they can still assign flying to you during that time, right? So, you could turn your phone on and have a trip assignment. So what's the benefit?

One benefit is you can take a later commute flight and not have to answer your phone while on that flight with no service.

Ok, so I KNOW I remember that if they assign you something on your first day of reserve before 18 hours of the start of your long call, there was a provision that you didn’t need a backup flight for your commute. Scheduling says that’s not a thing. Anyone know the reference for this? I’m not finding it.

PWA 23.S.2.a.5. Note three.

Also, SRH pg 82.

No, they cannot assign a trip that reports inside the two hour-noncontactable window. That's the benefit. Exception being that if you officially check your schedule within that window (and find no assignment), you revert to normal "promptly available" and could then conceivably be assigned a trip within that window (with no expectation that you could make the report time any sooner than "promptly".)

Scheduling says a lot of things. However, not sure why they care. All that matters is that you are protected by the PWA in the event of a miscommute. Can you explain the context?
