Reserve for Dummies
#3991
I have finally, for the first time in my career as an airline pilot, experienced a month on reserve where I didn't get absolutely abused. This was actually really nice and I take back everything bad I've said about reserve.

Don't get used to it.
Reserve isn't supposed to be sunshine and lavender smelling salts. It's the worst trip with the worst other pilot into the worst hotels/overnights and the worst weather with the broken-est airplanes and least friendly flight attendants.
Junior for a reason. Normal ops, anyway. Covid kinda disrupted this. But it will revert to the mean.

This happened to me once at a previous airline.
Don't get used to it.

Meanwhile I'm getting paid guarantee and at 500 hours of block for the year. Would someone explain to me where the disparity comes from?

I have not seen an if-needed YS work for me yet. Sounds like maybe some people have them to work but that seems to me to be more luck than skill. If you’re relatively senior and want a specific time slot you’re better off just YS first in sequence with the single time listed. NB is still getting max SC, so I assume WB is too. Track your reserve availability list for a week or two to see how your specific category is being treated.
