Shortcall periods are 9 hours. You are expected to be in the vicinity of the airport on short call loosely defined as 2 hours by surface transportation. If you are called and get caught in traffic and don’t get there for 3 hours no harm no foul. Living 3 hours away is not going to cut it with the CP. Most in that situation drive an hour closer and hang out somewhere.

Also keep in mind, practically speaking, it is rare to be on SC and get a last minute callout. It can and DOES happen (and you should always be in position), but the vast majority of the time on SC, if you get used at all, you will know well before your report of an assignment. It’s just that it will be less than the 12-hour Long Call response. YMMV.

Just for NH’s, the answer to this is always, “I’ll be there as quickly as I safely can”. Just because the report is in 30 minutes doesn’t mean you will face discipline if you take slightly over 2-ish hours. Be diligent, but don’t rush, don’t speed, don’t run.
BL: I’m simply saying it’s not like it happens all the time. My extensive experience has been that more commonly, it’s a 7-8 hour callout.
But again, always be in position. Always.

No such thing. Here’s how all my SC callouts have gone.
Phone rings, answered.
CS: You have been assigned rotation XYZ at ABC airport. Report is at ZYX.
Me: Ok, I’ll be there as soon as I can.
CS: Thanks.
It’s not rocket science. We have NO time to report. There is a zone of reasonableness based on that specific callout if weather is bad, time of day and a million other things. That’s why we don’t have a specific time. They can give you a 15 min report. It’s irrelevant.

Relevant, but not really important: in 8 years most of which I have spent on reserve in NYC, I have NEVER been told what airport I’m supposed to report to. I’ve always had to ask and they never know without saying hold on and doing a bunch of typing.
Just a pet peeve, I guess. Seems like I would want to have that info ready before I called a crewmember if I was the scheduler.

there's a difference between getting a sub 2 hour report and reporting in sub 2 hours. The fact is, they happen and that what posted to explain to the other guy who said they are rare. It doesn't mean I'm breaking laws to get there when they told me to be there.
