The Gumm Strikes Back

I was also struck by his claim to reassert Captain's authority "across work groups". And it's refreshing to also see admission that blind adherence to data and metrics can "allow ourselves to become so rigid that we start making decisions that actually don’t make sense". The Pentagon doesn't hold a candle to the "paralysis by analysis" we have at the widget. It never ceases to amaze how quickly Mgmt can lose the forest for the trees. If there is follow-trough on that, it will be a welcome change.
Also, an open door policy... That could be interesting.

Our management team is so obsessed with avoiding 3 or 4 minute D0 delays that they easily lose sight of the larger issues in our operation that often turn into multi-hour delays or cancellations.

I'm sure one of the top things they'll find is how to build the late evening ATL-SFO into trips better. By far the leg I get called for OOBWS for the most. That trip regularly goes IA too. Even Greenslipers like nah

Pilots hired at Delta after 2007 have no idea how bad this airline once was. I once flew an entire 4 day trip with 12 legs and never left within 30 minutes of being on time with zero weather issues. RA showed up and the first thing he did was introduce analytics because as he stated if you don’t know what the problem is you can’t fix it. Pilot forums hammered him for it at the time. Complained about having to respond to info requests on delays. 3 years later we were a on time machine and yields went from well below industry average to industry leading.

Besides fixing those issues, he also created a product people were willing to pay for. Leo would degrade the product on par with WN and then wonder why we couldn’t command a higher fare.

Have to agree with you there. Every leg in ATL, busy or not, it was a 10 minute wait for ramp personnel and then maybe as long for a jetway driver and oh, maybe we will just cancel a flight at any given moment.
