I think driving all the way to a "long" layover only to sleep for 8 hours, get up and get back in a skyhop for a 30-45 minute ride is pointless.
If I were PWA king I'd make the cutoff 13.5 hours. 12 is too short for most longer drives to eat and sleep, plus have a little bit of wind down/wind up time. 15 is too high because even with a bit of a drive you've got a decent amount of time to go out and do something nice (eat, walk around the city, etc). 13.5 strikes a good balance, and of course there'd always be some cities with their own individual cutoffs.

I think it's fine as it is. Most airport hotels are out in the middle of nowhere with no options except for the hotel restaurant and maybe fast food chains. I would be open to something broader like any layover under X hours should be within a 20 min drive to the airport, opening up non-downtown suburban areas with some decent amenities, but it's going to be hard to find specific language for that to satisfy everyone.

the biggest problem is that our hotel committee has essentially no say in our hotels under the current PWA. The only say we have is in “exception” properties, where we don’t stay downtown for layovers over 12 hours. I think we should agree to more “exception” properties, but I do not agree with changing the cutoff. I think keeping our leverage in making sure any exception properties are actually good and near food options is important. We don’t need to stay at airport holiday inns 15 minutes away in the middle of nowhere, and you can bet that’s where the company would put us if they could.

Hard pass. Very hard pass. Most airport hotels suck tremendously. Crappy gyms and severely limited food options.

The results would be conflicting at best. There's probably 17,000+ differing opinions. The Long Island City medium layover generated disdain when we had it, and lamentations when it was removed.

When I read this my first thought was “wait we had a layover hotel affiliated with that famous psychic lady?”

Sort of like they are on contract surveys? In that case, why even get input? Nothing has changed significantly regarding layovers and hotels and short/long times in the 18 years I’ve been here. But a whole lot has changed with the number of block hours flown, layover times and duty periods. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to get some new and fresh ideas.

It certainly does - food options in the hotel are abysmal.
