SD's weekly memo:
I want to update you on Flight Attendant hiring. Today, In-Flight Service announced that it will be hiring 225 non Language of Destination, or non LOD, flight attendants. For this specific round of hiring, In-Flight plans to interview and hire from its existing pool of competitive applicants who applied or were referred for flight attendant positions during the application window that occurred earlier this year. So, these new positions will not be posted on eBid, and In-Flight will not be requesting any referrals at this time. Interviews for the 225 new flight attendants are scheduled to begin in August and Initial Training will start in September. All new-hires will begin flying before the Thanksgiving holiday and the new positions will be based primarily in Atlanta -- to support the introduction of 717 flying – as well as in New York. I realize that, of course, flight attendant hiring raises the question of when we plan to start hiring pilots. I can tell you that our Crew Resources team is currently analyzing our staffing needs for the next 18 months and will be making a recommendation regarding hiring in the coming weeks.

A) Because of the new 717s they need more FAs with hiring starting in 5 or so weeks. We don't need more pilots to support the new 717s right now.
B) They don't need more FAs because of the 739.
C) They don't seem to need more FAs because we have anything else on order.
D) They don't know yet if we're understaffed on pilots because it's not apparent and they need to analyze it. As in, can we still shuffle people around like out of the 767?
E) Will they really put new hires in ATL? Youth in ATL? No... can't be. BTW, how come FAs don't have a green on green policy. I've had some intriguing trips lately with 3 all new FAs.
F) I did notice a lot of the A321 parking spot markings are blacked out now.

They can't hire any more than 225, because the 717's won't be able to get off the ground.

Also, C2012 and new pilot rest rules have had a marginal effect to increase pilot efficiency going forward.
Delta will hire 225 new flight attendants this fall as it begins preparing staffing levels for 2014. While more flight attendants will be hired next year as well, In-Flight Service leaders decided to begin the process early to spread out demand at the Atlanta Training Center as well as provide greater flexibility to handle new mainline flying.
The new hires will not be part of Delta’s Language of Destination program for foreign language speakers and will come from an existing pool of competitive applicants who applied or were referred for flight attendant positions during the open application window earlier this year. The positions will not be reposted on eBid or delta.com, and IFS will not be requesting referrals.
Well I guess I can assume our last contract allowed the company the flexibility to hire 625 flight attendants without the need to hire a single pilot. My conservative math tells me we gave up 625 pilots worth of productivity in our last contract!
Perhaps someone from the union side can correct me. By my count we have not hired any pilots since management has needed at least 625 flight attendantst. Also, we have a large number going through training and having a few months off. I cannot imagine a bunch if flight attendants are retiring. Any union likes want to show me what I am missing!

Vikz09,
How many pilots have come back from leave and furlough? That's probably your answer right there.
Problem is, most of them are coming back now that they can enjoy the seats and bases we've been displaced from.

Not at all. We are almost in a constant state of scope negotiations (or we think we are). However management has not engaged ALPA on the AF JV or VA JV. Our NRT codeshare will probably be renegotiated.
Management is constantly running proposals to DCI. Labor is a component of those proposals. Using the progress of agreements as a litmus, the Pinnacle MEC is more engaged and has had better success than the Delta MEC in the last year.
Moak gave them a seat at the table. They will participate. This happened under T O'M's watch, not our current administration. Still, it is my opinion our current Administration failed by not making a formal objection to an Executive Board, or even firing a warning shot across National's bow to warn them that we will not tolerate undermining of the Delta MEC on issues that are the direct concern of Delta pilots.

Add in that FA's are staffed at a rate of at least 3 to 1 greater than pilots(probaby more) which really shrinks your 625 WAG. Add in the return of over 200 Military leave pilots and you're pretty much a wash.
