Pay Back Days

Keep in mind that you need sufficient reserve coverage to use your PB days, similar to being awarded a PD. This summer may be tough, depending on your category.

So if the reserve coverage is positive on any given day - Can I drop a 1 day trip on that day via the payback days option in PBS, or do I have to call and talk to scheduling?

Basically I am asking if the process is fully automated or is scheduling has a say.

It's totally automated via the PCS runs.

Go to icrew->PCS->Leave Requests (I think)->payback days

If the available coverage is greater than required it will go through - no conversation required.

Another PB trivia item I learned a few months ago is you will get an extra PB day if you release after 1400 local, as they add on 10 hours of rest before your PB days can begin. This will net you an extra day in the PB bank. Just something to keep in mind when sharpshooting GS's this summer. All other things being equal, a trip that ends after 1400 is more valuable than one that gets done early (assuming you only have X days remaining in the month). <---the more you know...:D

In nearly every instance these guys had vacation, CQ, etc. which probably had a lot to do with it.

Unstacking/trip coverage is a very complex entity, and not subject to glib generalities (like I myself proposed).

However I still contend that any senior guy purposely bidding a reserve line will get the days off he wants. In fact I believe that the company cannot unstack into the top half of any category--though I may be mistaken.

its a complex animal/teenage girl alright. however I will say this, in my case I was awarded 9 coverage days, basically every sat and sun which is what I bid off. Then the guy below me, no vacation or training in his case, held weekends off line. Not a single day of flying was on one of the nine I was unstacked into.

I was one of those random cases. That said I would have probably done that again instead of risk spending a month unqualified with a 65-67 hr line.

but its the last month I am bidding a reserve line and from the looks of it most ahead of me did the same for April and bid away from reserve. It will be junior again.

You're right in saying this, depending of course on just how senior we're talking. Regular and reserve lines are awarded in PBS separately but simultaneously for each category, and there are different unstacking rules for each.

For regular lines, the Company may only unstack to a certain point without the consent of the PWG, i.e., ALPA. For reserve lines, each day of the bid period must be made available as an X-day on at least 15% of the reserve lines in a category. Additionally, any reserve unstacking must be justified to the PBS Committee, normally by showing that there would otherwise be fewer reserves available than required on a given day without that unstacking.

Are you sure about this one? I released at 1449 and received a PR day which I assumed was Payback Rest. I was assigned a trip on my PR day but It didnt report until 1530.

no, you are right. You'll get PB Days then the last day is PR which is a partial payback day and ends 10 hrs after you were released. If it was the end of the month and those PB days were going in the bank rather than on your schedule then the PR day would be a full PB day.
