Hey new guys, I spent the first 7 years at DAL commuting and attempting to juggle family life & work. All it accomplished was 6-8 quality days off a month at home and 1 Greenslip the entire time. A year ago I gave up and moved. Best decision in my life. Feeling very good about turning down my 3rd & 4th Greenslip for the month. Have averaged 105 hours a month this year and have had more time at home than ever. Spent the last 4 days with family & the next 6 doing nothing but catching up on honey do lists & a bit if boating. More important things on life than the almighty dollar. We only go around on this planet once (that we know of).
Do yourselves & your families a favor. Move to your base as soon as you can. That is good advice, and sometimes I wish I wasn't as close to my family and friends...but my wife and I both grew up outside Chicago and our families both still live here. I'm still close to my friends from high school, likewise for my wife. I've considered moving multiple times and know I'm losing money by not living in base but have offset that loss by starting a business that does pretty well, which allows me more time at home with kids and family, instead of chasing money. As my parents get up there in age, I will never regret that I didn't spend enough time with them. I see them and my sisters and my in-laws several times a week. I hate commuting, and I wish it was easier, but I will commute for the rest of my life if it means working with all of you here at Delta, AND spending as much time as I do with the people I've known my whole life. That's what's important to me. YMMV. Peace, E |

Can't do that if they're "Fly Confirmed." Verbotten. In the fine print.
I guess I never will buy any, if you can't cancel them! But then again, if I ever did pay for an airline ticket...well...I guess I'm doing it wrong! :D This ties into that whole "Live in base" thing above. I did live in base at one time, and life was easy, then they closed it. So I chose to move to where I want to spend all my days off, since I have more days off than on. When I have days off, I just want to stay home and enjoy my lake, boats, fishing, sailing, sunsets, etc. and not worrying about the traffic on I85 or rushing in to cover a GS in the ATL. I was teaching my youngest daughter how to fly fish, right off my dock earlier tonight. She caught a bass! Priceless. Been commuting for 18 years, never regretted it. When I wake up and look out my back window, I never see ATL, and that's how I like it! |

Yeah, you're right. With Kaplinger Kreme, we'll get it all for free.
That IS what you're saying, right? Or are you a cheap *** pilot that would have counted out pennies for the company reimbursed tip back in the day? Some on here will get that. I'm sure YOU won't. Good god, you're funny, T...just pointing out the fact that you have to also consider the money that goes toward ALPA out of your profit sharing and you go Kaplinger on me? Did you have a bad dream with him in it the night before? Wow. Dude......you're going to screw yourself in the a heart attack from that high blood pressure if you don't start relaxing just a wee bit. |

That's correct.
You avoid income tax but they deduct Social Security, ALPA and also DPMA. That's the reason I use 90% instead of 100%. If you tell Fidelity 100%, then all those deductions come out of your next check. Not a big deal unless you have some other pre-arranged deductions or budgeting issues. |

Do yourselves & your families a favor. Move to your base as soon as you can. For the past 16 years, I have basically been able to pursue anything that Delta has to offer that my seniority will hold. From here you can be an instructor, work in management, be junior and sit reserve; be senior and pick up anything that falls into the pot; and never bother checking the weather or travelnet. I personally choose to sit on widebody reserve and see how long I can grow my beard before I get called out. The beauty is that everybody wants something different. Whatever you want at Delta, however, is easier and more available at a hub. (Junior hubs are obviously better yet) I understand that many people can't move because of family or other important reasons and I support initiatives that make the lives of commuters easier. But, if you're a new hire and have a choice, make the effort sooner rather than later. You'll most likely be glad you did. |
