I don't know how PBS would handle that. Anyone have an idea?

Guys,

There have been several recent PBS questions and speculative and even incorrect answers. The best thing to do is first understand how PBS and reserve work together. Download the PBS Gouge and read the reserve section. There are some extremely well-thought-out provisions, but it can get a bit complex and reading that section a couple of times through (and keeping it handy for reference) is always very beneficial.

Further, if you want to know about the particulars for your particular life (vacation, carryin trip) and what a line in December could look like, what your pay would be, reserve obligation, etc, then right on the very main page when you log into PBS is everything you need to know, resource and information-wise.

Or, you could go straight to this website.

PBS Help

I especially recommend the PBS Reserve Pay Excel Spreadsheet Calculator--on outstanding tool.

Bottom line is that this forum is good for quick questions but you really need to spend some time with the "source documents" to truly get all the correct info you need.

And to indulge you and the prior guy's question, if you had a five day trip departing Nov 30, spilling over Dec 1-4, and you had a reserve line for December, the way PBS would handle it would be as follows:

The days Dec 1-4 are just working days. It would be as if you had four on call days in a row to begin the month, and it just so happened that you already had a "prebuilt" trip over those days. Your reserve guarantee is no different than any other full-month reserve pilot. However the value of those days applies against your reserve guarantee and will boost your RAW score for later in the month when you are on call again.

*EDIT* There were some stellar follow-on replies, so to clarify one thing from the above paragraph (as reflected in the replies). In the above example you indeed should NOT bid x-days over Dec 1-4 because you are already working. However, PBS will allow you to do so! If you did you would be working for "free" because there is no special treatment or pay consideration in this scenario. You would be giving yourself four fewer x-days for nothing. If you did make that mistake a phone call to crew scheduling after the fact should resolve it.

Thanks to the follow on posters for their answers.

This, by the way, is completely different than for pilots with preawards like vacation, mil leave, CQ, etc. Those values do indeed result in prorated X days, reduced personal reserve guarantee, etc. Do NOT confuse the two!

The spill trip is there already, so you are saying I can bid say, "reserve days 1-7" and PBS would award reserve days on those dates even though I have a spill trip on some of the same days?

Thanks

Yes they are days worked, reserve days worked. You will get paid for the trip just like normal but it will be applied to/subtracted from your reserve guarantee for the month. So no difference in pay unless you end up exceeding your reserve guarantee for the month. You will have a reduced guarantee because of the week of vacation.

Yes you can bid to be on call on those days and that's the way you should do it. You will not get any extra pay if you bid those as X days and you will lose the X days if you do. If for some reason you DO get X days over the footprint of the trip, I think you can call scheduling and try to have them moved. Not 100% sure on that but I think that's been past practice.

Spot on Denny. A couple years ago I had the exact scenario in paragraph two. I called Scheduling and they moved X days to put me on call for the spill over trip. Without the X day move, I would have been flying the spillover for free.

Every Pilot that flies reserve should have the Reserve calculator spreadsheet saved to their desktop for reference. I use it every month that I bid reserve or even contemplate bidding reserve.

If I put in to slide my vacation +7 but I would also want +4,+5 or +6, do I have to put each in separately or will the +7 give me anything up to +7? Thx

You would put in a range of 4 to 7. PBS will try to slide it the furthest and work its way back.

Thx! Thinking about next month. I got lucky moving vacation for November not knowing the above.
