Then as he thanked us all for being here, he said: "neither me or my copilot have our laptops in the cockpit, so we'll just be landing in Atlanta, not over-flying it by 100 miles." There was a little nervous laughter, but mostly just puzzled looks.

Am I the only one that thinks that was a stupid thing to say?

Sometimes you need to be appreciative of what you don't have to experience. In this case I'm glad I wasn't in uniform in the back deadheading and having to be embarrassed for this guy.

I think the PS suggestion was to keep him out of trouble rather than get him into it. Imagine RA, EB, SD or some other VP type riding in the back when such a PA is made. Nuff' Said

Exactly. In this case, intervention sounds like a good deal for the CA. Without retribution, he needs to understand that his "style" is not in the company's best interest. If I were a freq flyer on his jet, I'd be outraged. If I were a js'er, I'd be embarassed.

Call'em (pro standards) and let them make the decision if it warrants a "talk" with said pilot.

Well said. This guy's performance is entirely worthy of our sarcastic comments behind his back, but this PA (in and of itself) is not necessarily something to bring to the attention of either Pro Standards, or the Company.

I completely disagree! This guy is an embarrassment and his comments about laptops and taxiway landings are inappropriate and counter to the message our company wants to hear from their pilots. Pro Standards is not that big of a deal. This guy needs to tone down his self serving and self deprecating comments. Pretty hard to do at nearly the same time!

True but I think it is being blown out of proportion. I have flown with a couple Capts who mention the total years of flying and hours between the two of us and mentioned that we were former military pilots. I dont think he was being a tool......MANY pax LIKE to hear that there are military or former military pilots.
I have had pax tell me they like it.

Just what I've heard.

I agree, there are a few dorks at Delta.
It is my 4th airline and the percentage is way less than the average.

PA's like "this is Brad Pitt and George Cloony" or "the good news first - is I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance, the bad news - we are going to be late" or "ALLLL RAISE!!!" when he turns off the seatbelt sign at the gate - most certainly are an embarrassment..

I was REALLY thinking hard about saying something, but since I'm the new guy here, I really don't know what's normal yet. I think you guys have cleared it up pretty well. Next time...retribution!
