Buzz, I feel your pain. Did it for 4 years. Loved the plane once I figured out VNAV (my first glass). I was surprised when I came to the 765 that it doesn't always hold everything together either. Not to the extremes of the -800 but not up to the high standards I had heard about on the vaunted 767. Of course I don't discount operator error!

PS--6.6 hrs, JFK-SEA, winter, pre- inseat video. Loooong flight in an -800!

Hey A320 guys, how is that VNAV? Speaking of which the A320 sim mockup is in the air and space muesem. It does takeoffs and landings all day. Its ironically right next to the Delta 742 in Northwest colors. Just teasing.

When you guys start flying the the old NWA 55xx 757s, do not trust VNAV path if assigned a speed. Those old processors are so overloaded with Pegasus software they they really are overwhelmed. The old saying, "FlCh is your friend below 10" is so true. Sometimes it's your friend above 10 too, or at least VNAV speed.

I agree with Buzz, use the throttles to hold the speed and let the box hold the path or visa versa. For sure, hit decend now about 5 to 7 miles outside a high altitude cross.

Hey Burn, I did a 17.6 in the C-141 with two air refuelings back in the Desert Storm days. I thought that was bad. I think the 6.1 in the 800 is much worse. At least on the Starlizard, I could get up, walk around, play some racquetball, take a nap, etc. (Not really). The 800? Well, at least we got crew meals. Not very good, but they were crew meals. "We've got the going for us." Shout out to you Carl.

Ferd,

If you have a high altitude crossing (on a FMS arrival for instance), just put a big ol' B after the crossing altitude, and it will always make it. Otherwise, it seems to feel that +/- 300' is okay.

I never really had any issues with the vnav. As long as you set it right it typically does a good job.

Oh Yea? I once did a 2.5 with a single engine turn in Marsh Harbor and thought I was gonna die! Haha! Oh, and don't forget the spoilers on the 800 just wake the pax and give the illusion you are slowing for arrival!

The bus is pretty good. It allows for +/- 10 knots either side of desired decent speed. The new software is nice in the fact that you can change the desired speed for the decent after beginning the decent phase of flight (without recruising the airplane). It does however like to hit the fix right at the altitude with usually translates into +300 feet (which is ok). Flight path angle mode is nice in that it will guarantee that you cross the fix at the altitude and speed up if needed (not sure if the boeing has that mode).

TMU has been around for a long time.

No issue with sloppy v-nav. 767 is that way too. I guess it may go to VNAV speed if it gets bad enough, but I never let it get that far.

I agree about the Spirit birds, just repeating what I heard.
