Ask for a room! They did this to me the other day, and they ended up putting me up for a few hours at the crown plaza. Subtly mention fatigue and you may bolster your odds. Sorry that happened, good luck.
I'll keep it in mind for next time though. :) |

Had a few of those as well. I always figured when they started pulling stuff like that, they had already passed you for the PC. It was just fun and games after that.
Yeah, they liked to have fun with us at CoEx. :)

Apparently you left before Reno became the airport of choice. 9-step SE procedure w/ 3 different VORs (whose frequencies were not initially listed on the 10-7) and no graphical depiction. THAT was fun...or not.

On the MD88/90, the back of the QRH section has a paragraph basically saying the Captain can perform "common sense" action prior to executing memory items if it deems necessary.
Simple scenario. One of your engine has an uncontained severe engine damage at V1, you are now no longer bind by how we were trained and wait until the jet stabilizes and the PF calls for the QRH. The Captain can pull the fire handle when he deems necessary. It was how we trained in my recent CQ. I think it's in the right direction. I think in order for the crew to be able to do that, you need some system knowledge more than enough to pass the ESV. Don't you think? Carl |
It sounds like the philosophy between NWA and Delta is fairly similar. NWA got rid of memory items completely. We had a red-bordered checklist in front of us for critical items. It was assumed that common sense items like putting on the oxygen mask with smoke in the cockpit would be done. This item was on the red bordered checklist anyway though. As far as limitations went, we were not required to recite them verbatim, but we were expected to not break any limitations in the sim. This required knowing the limitations, but took the stress off of us caused by flat out memorizing them. We showed up to the first day of systems class cold. No prior studying required. It was kind of nice. I'm going to miss that when I'm studying full-time for two weeks prior to going to class. It's going to be frustrating flying one aircraft while studying for another.

Delta used to have the hard-card...then the lawyers got hold of it. I'm willing to bet that you'll see the hard-card (red bordered) list return. Seriously, though... theres like 10 limitations to memorize and even less bold face. If you can't do that you shouldn't be flying airplanes. |
