I'm not sure if you are talking about a possible Alaska or HA merger, but if it was Alaska, I have a feeling you would be the first one to use the word "super." Why? Because they would argue that there 737's are equal to our 757's and 757er's. I think we would all agree that those airplanes and pilots are "super" and shouldn't be mixed with Alaska 737 pilots. Or, am I wrong? :o I think the term is hilarious and cliche, but I also have no shame in reusing it either. |

Thanks! I'd pick the 73N in SLC - the ER is a nice plane and decent trips, but the reserve is tough. Short calls (max 6 a month) are a 24 hour deal. Typically in NYC I get 10am to 10am or 12pm-12pm, but they also throw out 5am to 5am at times (required two night in NYC to cover), so if you just sat short-call all month, that could required 12 nights away from home, just for the SC. The domestic planes are more of 12 hours on call, but I'm not sure. One of the guys on here a lot, BuzzPat is on the 73 in LAX, he can fill you in on that. I think he's been going back in seniority also. Having a line is really nice - you can swap trips, pick up more, drop trips, and generally have a better life than reserve. I'd also wager that a 73N lineholder would make about as much money as a 7ER reserve. |

International reserve is even worse because of the 24hr shortcall Effectively you can be on SC twice as much as a domestic only category, to top it scheduling has in the past scheduled 24 on/24 off SC which is even worse for a commuter. If you're going to be reserve in LA you cover 3 airports which makes getting around tricky without a car... For being reserve SLC is a good deal. $35 at the airport Inn $40ish at Baymont Suites and a great bunch of guys in the lounge/CPO. I'd go for being a lineholder over commuting to reserve any day. A320 in SLC seems like a solid bet and thats a comfortable jet. 73N in SLC give you a chance to change it to LAX at a later time, but the cockpit is small and loud. M88 MSP is great seniority, there's a decent amount of commutable trips but that 27% is more like 50% at any other base because MSP is still in the "build-up" phase with something like 30% on reserve. The Maddog looks scary but flies well and is roomy and quiet, the 90 has big motors and will fly West from MSP... YMMV Cheers George |

Thanks! I strongly recommend the 73N position if you can hold a line in SLC. That position in category may put you in reserve status during the winter months but should make you a line holder when the schedules ramp up. With the current hiring you may be above the 60% mark by the time you come back. Commuting to reserve is most undesirable. All international categories will subject you to 24 hr short call which makes the commuting that much worse. With no mainline flights PHX-LAX you will not be able to reserve a JS. So it boils down to the quality of life that you want. You will have a choice and that is always a good thing. |
