Thanks, I've just printed this out and stuck it in my bag. With all the stuff I've been reading so I don't screw this up.....this is the best.

One other question. I've got 10 days total availability and since they have SC me over a weekend, can they:

- Put two days SC back to back (wouldn't think so)
- Give me a day off (Sat afternoon/Sun morning) and back on SC

Or will one be enough in my scenario. Thanks, just trying to figure out how many days I'll be in the hotel reading APC.........vs in my study reading APC:D

Ferd

Fred, yes they can.

What they will do is wait to assign you SE, since now that you are not on X days, you only need ten hrs notice prior to the start of a SC. Yes, even for International. They will call you and reduce your first SC by a few hrs to start a new 24 hrs SC period, or they will start a new SC period 10 hrs after you ended your last one.

They can literally keep you on the hook for quite some time. Some of that changes in May, but watch your sked, and do not get caught out of position.

I have seen them do this more in the commuter bases of LAX and NYC. I have not watched SEA 330 reserve too closely.

Quite true, and then they get to go home after a "day at the office" and deal with normal life, whereas a forward deployed combat pilot does not. That in itself creates issues.

I was flying helicopters into Afghanistan on the C-5 into a base where my wife was deployed working at the hospital. It wasn't home but we did get to check that box that not too many people can check off.

I have noticed that wherever I am. It grabs the location data of the IP addy and then pushes ads to you from that area. At least that is what I assume it is doing.

My experience only:

They can put you on back to back shortcalls. For int'l, due to the 24 hr s/c they wil usually give you rest and restart your s/c at the same time as the previous day. If your category flies domestic, the 1st 12 hrs you are legal for domestic and int'l, the second 12 you are legal for int'l only. Between s/c they have to give you (I think) 9 hrs rest. So it can be 24 on 9 off 24 on. As a commuter you are skrewwed. Or it can be 15 on 9 off 24 on. It really is any permutation of the above.

There is a time in the morning when they are assigning s/c like around 8 or 9 am, for the next days coverage. Often they wont post it until later.

If you want to know definitively whether or not you are safe to commute home, call scheduling. Typically they dont use line of sight scheduling and will tell you you dont have s/c tomorrow.

There are a couple schedulers who IMO seem meaner than the others. They really enjoy messing with your life.

However, most are very accomodating. My recomendation would be to find out the names of some of the accomodating ones and ask for them by name when you want to work something out. If they can, they usually do accomodate you. Remember, they do have a schedule to staff...sometimes the answer is no.

The only strategy I have found on reserve that gives a commuter some semblance of a life is to bid 4 on 3 off. This normally results in s/c on the 1st available day and L/C for the others. You are non-available for the long trips and you end up commuting 4 or 5 times a month.

Has anyone ever been given SC on their final day of reserve? Sometimes I see pilots with 2 days of avail being given SC and I was wondering if anyone has ever been given SC on their final day of reserve?

Got it twice last month and once this month. They are doing this more and more. I think its new hires doing this. When I call to get done 2 hours early to commute home they wonder why I was on SC for 1 day avail

Remember before a golden day you're off the hook at noon. Hold them to that!
