I do not see that on connects carriers at all--even with the giant strides I have seen in the QOL of the regional pilot. I never saw any sort of decent pay, trip rig, positive space commuting, reasonable duty time days when I was there-and I am glad it has improved.

Make no mistake, ALL of that improvement has come at the expense of mainline carriers. SWA and other productive low paid carriers came in and started hitting yields with the low hanging fruit of the trunk carriers. To battle back, the regional carriers boomed with the advantage of the RJ. Legacy pilots ended up taking the hits via jobs, pay, QOL, pensions, and just about everything else. I didn't see many regional pilots worried a whole heck of a lot about finding jobs for them. Now, the majors have ironed out the issues, and the tide seems to be turning. Regional margins are coming under fire, because the airplanes can't support the inflated compensation structure as predicted. The very boom some of you have enjoyed has now come full circle. It's a cruel business always has been, always will be. Military guys want their buddies to get jobs, regional pilots want to get their buddies on. Everyone has their reason why they deserve the job. Me? Just give me a turboprop pilot-great lakes, piedmont, king air corporate, p-3. Humble, hungry, and good sticks they are. Make your own path, it will be much more satisfying in the end, at least it was for me. Or complain the rest of your life. Your choice.
Great post!
The fact that mainline jobs are being hung over the heads of regional pilots as a mean to bolster pay cuts and concessions is abhorable.
The fact that ALPA supports this garbage is even more disgusting.
Creating certain opportunities for some inevitably takes away other opportunities for others.

EXCELLENT POINT FOR YOU TOO!!!

Which brings up a bigger picture point. While many like to blame the PCL group for what they did, who's really to blame? It's more like the management as well as ALPA national. Although that's nothing new.

It's really not that different than what the legacies did during the BK's. Took deep cuts, just to maintain they're existence. With some of the legacies taking almost 10 years to see any kind of improvements to work rules and pay. And that pay in some cases is basically nothing more than concessionary rates adjusted for inflation/COL increases.

Sad really. Pilots would rather go micro instead of macro, get hung up on fighting/blaming each other, being our own worst enemy, etc.

And NO, I don't work for PCL.

There is no difference between us. Only our union was more successful in negotiating career progression for us. I'd have no problem with them having the same SSP or better yet a FLOW program or even better we all be on one seniority list with Delta! Shocker I know, I fly airplanes with Delta placarded all over them, can't say welcome on board Mesaba, Pinnacle, Endeavor airlines. I must per the FOM state Delta. My badge says Delta much more prominently than Pinnacle, always fun explaining to TSA when your number doesn't show up on KCM. But I am not Delta and my sweat equity is meaningless against an Eagle pilot applying to Delta. I'm an imposture from another planet.

Since this blog went from Delta Air Lines hiring to entitlement and who should have what rights I figured I'd jump into the mix and drop my own bomb.
How about privileges for the military pilots who for the last 13 years have been deployed all over the Middle East fighting a war in Iraq and Afghanistan separated from our families and now being hit by sequestration. Also, all the alert missions we now fly providing air defense and escort here over our 48 states. I was in pilot training on 9/11 and have been part of both wars ever since.

Seriously, I don't feel like I deserve an interview over anyone else military or civilian. I signed up knowing what my job could entail. I think we should just all fill out our applications as accurately as we can and let our job experience speak for itself.

Do I want a job with Delta Air Lines? You bet your butt! My dad has flown for them since 1985 and my mother has been a flight attendant since 1996. I want to be part of the Delta Family as much as the next guy. Do I get a guarnteed interview, no, and that is fine. All 10,000 of us applicants have paid our dues ten fold some way or another. Hopefully the most qualified pilot for the job gets it and soon we will all have our chance.

Hopefully we can look past the entitlement issue and just be happy for the guy who gets the interview on their merit and just keep hoping we get the email too.

Cheers

Great post. My thoughts exactly. Let the most qualified be hired. We have all made sacrifices.

Absolutely military veterans deserve favoritism in getting hired. Delta already has a great track record on this. It should always be that way IMHO.
