Don't think a chromebook will work, needs to run windows. I bought a cheap & small windows laptop ($250) which did the trick. If you're really cheap you can use stay late/come in early or days off and use Delta machines in the classrooms, but I liked being able to plug away at the hotel & home. As an aside, there are things that don't run on the company Surface (bidding desktop app, quarterly Delta training CDs & Turbotax for three), so I'm still getting mileage out of my cheap laptop while I'm out on trips even now (summer 2014 hire).

I just purchased a cheap lap top for training, I made it through initial on the 88 going to the library and using the companies computers but will not do that again. Headed back to the school house so I bought one at Best Buy 229.00 works fine for training material.

I saw that announcement, and although it's now paperless, the surface will have all the pubs in content locker but the initial classwork will still be ms dos based cd's that won't play on the surface.

Or are you talking about typing the whole flight plan in, manually?
If they want to go paperless, there won't be a paper 'dispatch release' anyway.
So we are always going to need some type of free/fast internet connection, every where we go, all over the world, at the gate, to upload our flight plans.

I lived in a crash pad for 4 months with mostly JetBlue pilots. I could usually point out one positive aspect to our reserve rules on every stay...they always said "you can do what?"... Like I could do 3 days or 15 days in a row. Most of the newhires there had to come in on most weekends for 3-4 days. Several of them didn't get enough flying to reach consolidation and had to go back to the sim. I gained some great respect for those at Delta who fought for the rules we have now. Sitting reserve at home is even better and I get to use the other side of the reserve rules that improve QOL for my situation now.

Most smartphones are capable of creating its own wifi hotspot depending on your data plan. You can create the hotspot and create a security code to keep others off your data. I know with AT&T you need the 10GB data plan in order to have the hotspot. I use it all the time with my ipad to download Tripsheets, flightplans, weather, etc.
