Several of them didn't get enough flying to reach consolidation and had to go back to the sim. I gained some great respect for those at Delta who fought for the rules we have now. Sitting reserve at home is even better and I get to use the other side of the reserve rules that improve QOL for my situation now.
You can string that many reserve days together? I don't have the FARs handy. I thought you had to have 30 hours off in 7 days.

Yes, and you are correct. It can be a good bid strategy if you live in base. If you're lucky, you'll get those rest periods at home. If not, it could be a long few weeks.

Or are you talking about typing the whole flight plan in, manually?

If they want to go paperless, there won't be a paper 'dispatch release' anyway.

So we are always going to need some type of free/fast internet connection, every where we go, all over the world, at the gate, to upload our flight plans.
That's exactly what I meant.

FWIW I don't think we will ever be 100% paperless. There's way too much timely information on the dispatch release/paperwork to try and be 100% reliant on a global/airborn wifi conex. We'll always have some amount of paperwork for each flight.

Your initial reserve bid can be for as many days in a row as you request (you'll get a 30-hr break when needed). However, once the bid is awarded you can't move X Days if your new schedule would create (the same) FAR violations.

Verizon Hot Spot is included in any data plan. At the gate I fire up the hot spot and download the flight plan and route extract from Icrew Mobile. Works great. Save a copy of the rotation to your desktop and you have instant access to your current rotation on the tablet as well.

I know it's my own data. Reminds me of 2001 when nobody would make calls because you didn't want to use up some of your 250 digital minutes for work. Wont be many years until data is as cheap as minutes are now. I remember paying $30 a month for a 30 minute digital plan on the first Motorola digital Star-Tac. That was in 1998.

Actually I would bet we will see it sooner than a lot of people think. What is the difference in dispatch sending paperwork to a printer vs. us getting a PDF on the surface? It would be very easy to have wifi at every gate that we use to download paperwork in PDF form. The only thing I can see staying paper is the signed portion of the release. And that is only because getting the FAA to sign off on some form of electronic signature will take decades.

I wonder how much Delta would save on boxes of dot matrix printer paper, printers, and ink if we didn't print 100 pages per flight every day. I'll bet it is a TON of money.

Unless I misunderstood one of the guys in my crashpad, I believe JetBlue has a means of doing exactly that via ACARS.

Remember, you don't actually need to upload the flight plan to the EFB. At a minimum, you just need to have the departure and arrival airport in it to pull up the Jepp charts. Prior to this, did you pull out the paper enroute charts and plot your route on them, every single time?

I have a 12 day stretch right now and will end a 4 day trip tomorrow and they assigned me 30 hours rest when I end tomorrow night. So I get a day off at home in the middle of my reserve duty. Just remember that if you get a rotation with a 30 hour layover that also resets you for another 6 day stretch. I used to get 30 hours off in my crashpad and I would either go home or non rev to another city to see family or friends.

If we are going to be 100% paperless, you'd better have the flight plan uploaded somewhere! Twice!
