Delta would have to fire 200-300 pilots from here to bring us up, they can't take that hit. We are several hundred short, and mainline is about 1500 short of pilots.
Where did you hear/see it written that mainline is 1500 short on pilots?

There is a 10-20% shortage at all pilot groups during this big retirement wave for the next 5 years at least.

"mainline is about 1500 short of pilots" implies a current shortage so forgive the confusion. You're speaking of the future one.

Correct, if they are all staying till 65, then it is a future one, if there are early punch outs, then it is a current shortage rather quickly. Bottom line, is hiring isn't ending at any airline, anytime soon.

Early punch outs are certainly occurring. As of last August, mainline's projected age 65 retirements for 2017 was 265. In the first three months I've moved up 100 numbers. That's on pace for 400 for the year or about 50% above the expected rate of 265.

It's starting get interesting real quick as you noted. Hang on for the ride!

Easily the best ancillary investment strategy ive heard to date. Plus delta would be down about ~20% of its pilots after their heads explode.

We'd need serious cleanup.

Good job on the analysis. It's very apparent you are already at DL, at least in your mind.

Bring everything in house gets a lot of cheers from me and like thinkers. There's a dozen ways to make it happen, and 5 or 6 times that in reasons why it won't happen today or next month. Delta would try a lot of little things incrementally before doing the above.

I think it could work. Your plan makes sense, and is essentially a flow. But that seems to be a sticking point in the craw of DL (at least for now).

The key to it is scraping off the top for DL, not the middle nor the bottom. We have folks here now who don't want to move on, and they would have to retire out for this plan to be effective. And then there's the group of pilots who already got the double no. What to do with them?

Why wouldn't bringing all the flying in house via a fence work?

Thoughts?
