Different but related question: do many people move permanently to DTW or NYC and find roommates in training?

A couple of the younger single guys in our class "moved" to DTW. One of them is already planning on "moving" to NYC when it opens in September. For the most part, though, not really.

I was going to try that route (and once reserve is over I'll dump the pad and go back to it), but I sat reserve 12 days (scheduled 15, dropped 3) after OE. I flew twice during those days and only 1 overnight. That would've been a minimum of $550 in the "cheap" hotel. I pay half that for a private room in a pad and can have groceries and clothes here. Top that off with the fact that mine was same day commutability on start/end: Some guys aren't so lucky so the hotel costs only increase.
It's up to each person, but I'd recommend a crash pad while you're on reserve.

There are hotel crash pads that will cost between $120 and $160 for the month. This would be my recommendation if you are on reserve.

NYC is gonna cost more. About $300 a month. If anyone needs a recommendation for an NYC crash pad I can PM you some info... particularly if you wanna be close to LGA.

PS, Is it against ALPA contract policy to have COLAs for a domicile? NYC needs a COLA!
