For what it is worth BL told us in ground school during a Q+A that they are considering hiring before bringing back COLA/ELS's. They would rather be overstaffed for a bit and ready for recovery than caught with their pants down. To a follow up question he said if they hire while there are still COLA-0's out there the new hires would begin training with the understanding they too are COLA-0
The union is ok with this?

It sounds like the BL rumor is that any new hires will be hired as a COLA-0. Amazing.

While I have no idea if this is true or not, or if come Spring the company still tries to hire guys on as COLA 0s; but I suspect the union couldn't do anything about it anyhow. Newhires aren't protected by the union anyhow

Do y’all interpret this as they will get no pay during training, or they will get min guarantee until after their check ride then to ELS?
I think it would be completely inappropriate to pay new hires while there are involuntary ELS guys. The union can’t do much with new hires, but most if not all the ELS will be a year in and thus under the union care. Hard to get worked up over speculation but it’s an interesting conversation.

A very interesting conversation indeed. Paid or unpaid training, the company is going to have a hard time finding takers. Some furloughed pilots from other airlines with no other current employment prospects might roll the dice and jump on it, but no regional or corporate pilot in their right mind would leave a paying job for a chance at an Airbus type rating and some quality time on COLA-0. I see where the company is coming from as far as wanting to be ready to pounce when the time is right, but doing it while we still have pilots lacking a paycheck is madness. MAYbe I could be on board if all COLA-0/ELS pilots were back on the line and the company wanted to hire pilots into 0 hour lines - to be waiting in the shadows awaiting the call to be activated at a later date.
I can’t imagine that the union wouldn’t fight tooth and nail if new hires in training were going to be collecting min guarantee while some pilots on the line aren’t getting a paycheck. I could imagine that the company could try to get around this by not paying these COLA-0 pilots in training and claiming that they aren’t really “hired” until the completion of training. However, in that case, I think the new Frontier definition of “hired” would go down in the history books... right next to Bill Clinton’s meaning of the word “is”.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Excited to be part of the F9 family whenever it happens. As a permanently furloughed pilot who’s shop closed in April and had a class date of April 1, I would jump on the opportunity to get a new class date in this environment. However, it would be a hard pill to swallow knowing I’d go to training and not get paid on top of having to pay out of my own pocket for a place to stay. I could live with the COLA-0 as long as I could pick up open time and have a little income. I do understand though it wouldn’t be fair to pay new hire pilots in training while other pilots are out on COLA-0. Just my 2 cents.

At Great Lakes Airlines you weren't really hired, and definitely not paid, until you passed your checkride. They did buy us pizza once though... and the ground school instructor said "enjoy it guys, Great Lakes will never buy you another meal."
I felt really bad for the half of my class that washed out of training. Spend more than 2 months sharing a sh*tty hotel room, study your ass off and then wash out, and not make a penny. Ahhh... the good ol' days. Sorry if I went off topic there

While new hires don’t pay dues there are protections. Past practice arguments when filing disputes mostly and some representation in disciplinary actions. I can’t see the company being able to not pay new hires based on past practice of paying new hires outside of some sort of Loa that would have to address the current no pay colas as well.
