Since we're talking about heading bugs, why do some people insist on leaving the bug 1 or 2 degrees off the assigned heading? It's just as easy to fly 040 as it is to fly 041...
It's called attention to detail. It is something important in our line of work, it is what is expected of us and what their future employers seek of their potential candidates.

P.s. For that matter, let's apply this logic to the airspeed and altitude bugs too! What fun it could be to see how far off we can get!

I think I read this somewhere on this site, but it's worth repeating. Harken back to the "old" days of ded-rekoning and celestial nav.

On a long haul flight, Navigator requests Captain come left 1 degree to maintain proper course. Captain berates navigator, "damn it man, there's no way one degree is going to make a difference - you can't be that accurate, only give me turns of more than 3 degrees". Navigator sheepishly replies, Yes Sir.

10 minutes later navigator requests captain turn left 8 degrees. Captain replies - Now that's more like it!

10 minutes later navigator requests Captain come right 7 degrees.

I always set the heading bug off a couple degrees on the first leg of the trip to see if the guy is an air force guy, etc.

And what good is being within one or two degrees? People that are worried about these little things miss the big picture. Typically people that are highly anal retentive exhibit undesirable CRM attributes.

Then what is so hard about setting the assigned heading on the "digital heading select knob" to match? It seems to me more work to set an incorrect heading than the one assigned. But maybe that's me. And don't confuse CRM and cockpit "ambiance" with professionalism. You can be professional and precise without being a dick.

That is very true.

You are paid to b perfect on every flight. Reality is, you will fall short. But if you strive for perfection you will perform at a higher level. Train as you fight, fight as you train.

I think that you're missing the point. In this described situation, this heading centering happens when you're flying in NAV mode, not in heading mode, so it's not about maintaining an "assigned" heading. A Captain requesting that the FO (or vice versa) center the heading bug at every little turn in cruise is indeed annoying. If they're that anal, they can do it.

You can be a professional and not have the heading bug glued to the exact heading all of the time during cruise. One does not have to be anal to be "precise".

This.

Very similar to the "long sleeve shirt" or the "I'm standard" arguments in internet forum land.

It more shows who the judgmental tools are that categorize people by a small indicator.
