As one of the 6 month wonders, I will tell you that upgrade is crazy intense. They make it explicitly clear that they are out to break you if they can when you ask why so intense.
It is primarily because you will be flying with so many new F/Os and CRJs are pretty fragile machines compared to Boeings and Airbuses.
Take it for what it is worth from someone with 20+ years of 121 and a handful of transport category jet types (12,500 to 355,000#s).
I sweated every minute of it until my final line check.
Not to scare anyone who has the skills. Just be prepared when it's your turn.

I wonder if they mean to break you down on the sim training and over load you with emergencies.

They know it is a bad situation, and they just want to see your decision making skills. In several of the scenarios, there are no good answers. It is a session that is designed to test your leadership and decision making, as well as systems knowledge, not your flying skills.

I agree, upgrade shouldn't be cake walk, but if you know your stuff and can handle some stress it shouldn't be something you can't handle.

Upgrade should be a challenge! Here's how to meet that challenge. Study "hard" before! Ground school is 5 full days of lively discussion/ participation! Know your books before starting!
In the Sim you should see just about everything in the QRH! Read it before you go. Think about the steps of each malfunction & why it is in that order! The first 5 or so lessons you will learn what could go wrong with a CRJ. The good news is your check ride will be very straight forward.
Simply put, come prepared!

It wasn't like a drill sergeant yelling in your face that he or she was going to break you. Not at all. It was more along the line that the explanation given as to why so much was crammed into each sim session was that we're going to find out if we can load you up to your breaking point.
The Kobayashi Maru reference is funny because one day my sim partner (he passed, too) and I walked in for the brief and it was written on the white board.
I agree if you prepare and can plan and execute your way out of the scenarios, it all works out. But if you can't roll with it, it might not.
I'm only commenting about it at all because of all the "green on green" comments earlier in the thread. No one is getting a pass.
