Take your car. You'll not regret it. 5 and a half weeks without a car? I drove up and had the leisure of driving to the gym, supermarket, coffee shop to study, to the museum, training (didn't have to wait for bus), etc.

My class stayed at the Fairfield and there was a ton around there in walking distance. I do not regret not bringing my car-- but having said that, I am very greatful that others did because it was helpful. I paid the owner of the car each week for driving us around to class and back.
Here's the other thing, there really is no good gym close by so having a car would have been nice just for that if you have a membership somewhere like LA Fitness or others which are a few miles away.
You get your travel benefits on day 16 exactly, its US Airways policy that you have to be an employee for 16 days I believe. The company will positive space you anywhere you need to go -however- if you decide to leave training on the weekend you are on your own to get back in time. I left twice while staying in Dayton, on the third weekend and on the fifth I think. In both cases from Dayton to Charlotte and Charlotte to Dayton (those are psa flights) I had no choice but to ride in the jumpseat because the flights were full. And you are not in CASS at that point so there are some hoops to jump through to get the jumpseat which confuses the people in Charlotte for some reason.
Oh side note- absolutely take one of your weekends as see the Air Force museum, its incredible and free!

Highly, highly, highly recommend the AF Museum. Get there early and register for the bus ride to the experimental and Presidential Hangars. Walking around the XB-70 and X-15 is surreal.

I was really happy that I drove. It gave me the freedom to get around, and it didn't feel like I was trapped at the hotel. If I had it to do again, I would certainly drive. Also, if you can, drive to CVG for sims. There are really no restaurants or other good things in walking distance.
My class was in Dayton during Thanksgiving and Christmas, so the schedule was quite different. We had breaks for the holidays (4 days off), but had class on the rest of the Saturdays to make up for it. Most people went home for the holidays, but some stayed due to flight loads. Flights out of Dayton fill up pretty quickly, depending on the weekend.

Gonna fwd you some info on CLT, may help out. From what I've been told, a lot of the CLT lines are more commuter friendly, and you are able to bid late(r) show times even as a jr FO. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please. That's why I was planning on CLT vs TYS.

[QUOTE=AboveAndBeyond;1856259]I drove, and no one paid me?!?!

I'd happily help make a car payment....LOL! Totally worth it! When I was at Pinnacle initial in MEM, I drove. There were 2-3 of us that drove and we were the DD's (designated drivers). Nobody paid me either....but that's OK. Our hotel was across the street from the training center so we walked there. But otherwise it wasn't close to anything else and there'd be a carload of us going out to dinner or Beale Street.

In a hub (CLT), aside from a couple real early originators, the earliest showtimes will coincide with the first bank of the morning, which departs around 0730. Since there is more opportunity to swap out crews during the day in a hub, there is more of a variety of showtimes.
