Im former 121 and I'm thinking of taking my upgrade bid out since things are moving so quickly. I'd like to become more familiar with the CRJ and company ops before I upgrade and learning all that in 2-3 months will be tough.

As one of the 6 month wonders, I will tell you that upgrade is crazy intense. They make it explicitly clear that they are out to break you if they can when you ask why so intense.

It is primarily because you will be flying with so many new F/Os and CRJs are pretty fragile machines compared to Boeings and Airbuses.

Take it for what it is worth from someone with 20+ years of 121 and a handful of transport category jet types (12,500 to 355,000#s).

I sweated every minute of it until my final line check.

Not to scare anyone who has the skills. Just be prepared when it's your turn.

Well that's a resume killer - assuming PSA must report the failing event?

I was in that class..It was mostly leadership
and decision making..I'm former 121 previous captain ..The upgrade was
challenging but I had my act together.
You have to play the game..Treat every
sim lesson like a real flight and of course
discuss everything like you normally
would .The instructors have to see that
stuff...You are allowed to screw 2 items
up on the PC and be retrained during
the PC and still pass ..However if the
APD sees things going drastically
wrong and he feels you are beyond
retraining he can stop the event which is
what happened to the former PCL
and Comair guys...If your prepared it's
not that bad...

I'm curious who told you they are out to break you? That is pretty **** poor on the company's part to say something like that. Things must have really changed since I upgraded.

I wonder if they mean to break you down on the sim training and over load you with emergencies.

My buddy said it wasn't that bad at all. Obviously, some people either get it or they don't get it.

Not to sound like a total nerd, but I have heard the instructors call it the Kobayashi Maru. They give you a couple failures which lead you to make a decision between two outcomes, and both are bad. For instance, you will lose deicing and pressurization at 18,000' and your choices are to stay at 18,000' with low oxygen in the back for the passengers or to descend into heavy icing conditions below with no deicing working.

They know it is a bad situation, and they just want to see your decision making skills. In several of the scenarios, there are no good answers. It is a session that is designed to test your leadership and decision making, as well as systems knowledge, not your flying skills.
