Why would they start a new class when guys from the January classes are still sitting at home waiting to finish ground I believe?

Piedmont is trying to get as many pilots on property as quickly as possible. They figure, once you start class, you are locked in.

That way, if it takes you 6-8 months to finish class and a year to start breaking guarantee, then there is nothing you can do about it.

The person that will be the most junior captain 6 months from now has already been hired. The painfully slow training process will allow anyone that is already flying the line to build 1000 SIC and upgrade before anyone that is hired today.

Except, you know, they're paying you fairly decent money to have a nice long vacation for that entire time and you're advancing in seniority approximate 10% by the end of your first year, and then when you complete your first year you get another bonus for being an FO while collecting triple premium if you want to bust your ass to get 1000hrs SIC.

Meanwhile some of your friends are wondering how they're ever going to make it to a legacy, and some others are worried that they're not going to have a job since their regional isn't its contract renewed with its mainline partner.

Being on the seniority list during the "break" is great, but I am here to fly, upgrade, and make myself more marketable to Legacy. But that's just my impatient side getting the better of me.

That is fine, if you want to waste a year of your useful flying life just waiting to fly at a regional.

Enjoy.

While you are doing that, everyone else will be passing you by.

Agreed. However it's very comical watching people wank because they've got a 2-6 month delay in training where they're receiving full pay and benefits. Even after the delay, during the period of time there is a delay, folks at PDT are still upgrading more quickly than the majority of other 121 regionals which makes them more competitive in the long run compared to their peers at other regionals.

All things being equal, that first year everyone else is either sitting in a crashpad on reserve, or sitting in line to upgrade in a couple of years at another regional. Outside of DEC hires at other regionals a new FO will upgrade quicker at PDT than the other 121 regionals regardless if they have a wait in training or not.

I don't mind the break. Rather sit at home or vacation then to sit reserve where I am waiting for a trip that never comes. At least I am getting paid, not sitting in crash pad. Here I know I don't have to worry about moving up to a major like mine now. Yes I want to fly and this plane seems like a simpler systems. So all good for me.
