The Bro is second only to the CRJ-900s in terms of money makers for the company. We've been trying to add more to the fleet recently so I doubt they're going anywhere for a while.

In my opinion the future of the EMB-120 flying at SKW is dependent on the supply of new pilots for jet flying. If SKW is able to staff the jets I think the EMB has a future. If SKW is unable to attract enough replacement pilots I believe they will cannibalize the EMB-120 operation to staff the jets.

Yeah, from the looks of things alpa will talk xjt into self imploding "for the greater good of the industry"? I rode in a jumpseat with those guys a couple weeks ago and it was the worst flying experience of my life. They know it's coming. Hope they can keep the mess from affecting SKYW.

Is it true applicants who are current 121 are being offered starting pay at year 2?

Nobody on the line has heard that, and I think SAPA would have to be in the loop. So probably not.

Being 121 current doesn't get the company off the hook for training costs, although I had heard they were exploring with the FAA the possibility of putting CRJ 121 current hires through a much-abbreviated new-hire program. FAR 121 has a rarely-used provision for that IIRC.

Default Upgrade

Is there any truth to the rumor that lower time pilots can be bypassed for upgrade by those with more turbine PIC time?

PIC has nothing to do with it.

But you do need a certain amount of turbine 121 experience to upgrade. This is used to be airline policy but is now regulatory iirc. A new hire CFI might get by passed if his seniority could hold upgrade before he acquired the turbine time.

There's a requirement that someone upgrading needs to have at least 1,000 hours of part 121 turbine time. When Skywest was offering quick upgrades about 6 years ago people who came from other airlines and had the 121 time were sometimes able to upgrade when they were very junior because people ahead of them didn't have the 1,000 hours yet.

No one will bypass your seniority because they have more experience or more turbine PIC time, but if your number comes up for upgrade and you don't have the requirements they'll go to the next person in line. They still need to fill the captain slot.

The seniority list is updated with new hires a few days before class starts. Its pretty easy to determine the exact number of folks in a given class.
