RJ and Nice, thank you much for the info. It clears that up considerably.

Next topic, can any of you PBS gurus give us any info on vacation bidding. One of my big concerns going to PBS here at SPA is losing what we have now. Currently we can pretty easily turn a 7 day vacation period into a 20 day or more off stretch. I'm hearing from some that you will often get only the 7 days under some PB systems. I know a lot of it is "all in the language" but any thoughts would help, Thanks

One idea that I’ve heard floated it a high/low vacation credit option.

High vacation credit selection; you opt to use 30 credit from your bank, average line value for the month is 75 hours, 75-30= you must fly 45 credit (2 4-Days?).

Low vacation credit selection; you opt to use 18 hours from your bank, average line value is 75 hours, 75-18= you must fly 57 credit. But, you keep more hours in the bank for potential float.....

With this option, it all boils down to what exactly are average line values as to how much time you get off. Granted, under our current system you still have the potential to prematurely deplete your bank and get stuck with unpaid time off, but you still get that time off.....

Note, this is just one concept, we need to see the TA to find out what the details are.

In the bullet points, it mentioned something about maintaining current open time levels. If that’s the case, I’m not sure how much staffing will change. The whole idea behind pbs is to reduce your staffing requirements due to less open time, so that bullet point confused me...

PBS and vacation at my old company entailed getting something like 3 hours of pre-award credit over your vacation days. Then the company would build you a line up to the bid window using PBS.

So for example, you have 7 days of vacation and the bid window is 76-84 hours. You get 21 hours credit and then the company populated the rest of your month based on your preferences. In other words, 7 days of vacation would mean maybe 11-12 days off as a result of it.

The pitfall with that concept is that it’s a fixed value. With a variable credit option, you could use more VC time and get more time off, or use less, and have more leftover for float.

For me personally, the vacation language may make or break the deal....

75min divided up to the pilots. We’ve yet to see how. Equal would be about $39k each but it won’t be equal

The key to vacation under PBS is to get a high credit value per vacation day. In a hypothetical 80 hour PBS month ;if you have 7 days of vacation and the value is 5 hours per day that vacation credit knocks 35 hours off your 80 hours and you get built a remaining line of 45 hours. If you are senior enough you will not only get the 7 days off but plenty of time on either side of your vacation. If on the other hand the credit is only 3 hours per day the vacation credit is only 21 hours and the system builds a remaining line with a credit of 59 hours. Both lines would pay 80 hours but are very different from a QOL perspective.

Will we know the magic formula Alpa is using to divide the retro out before we vote? I hear it is based on time and seat but nothing concrete. Percentage on years? Higher for left seat? New hire gets a $1. Somebody knows.

I hear the same but we will see. I imagine anyone here less than 6 months won't get much but that's to be expected. I also think if you have been here 3 months or less you shouldn't get any of it. Sounds harsh but those who have been dragging this place around should be taken care of first.
