Does anyone think Spirit is hoping that the DOJ will stop the buyout?? I mean I don’t think NK Board members had much of decision in terms of avoiding of a lawsuit. Since the vote never officially took place, maybe the hopes of Frontier and Spirit can officially merge.

I mean talk about double dipping. $400 million cancellation fee plus then would be Frontier’s offer.

let’s be real. The new Spirit and Jetblue is only 9% of the market share… as much as the news likes to hype the “what if the DOJ blocks it”… the merger is gonna go through… again it’s only 9%

I don’t think they care about the 9%. It’s the removal of the largest ulcc maybe 60% ish of ultra discount fares to the consumer that might raise some hackles. Especially in this awesome economy. The first shot was fired across the bow with Biffle whining about the merger after the Frontier rejection. I’m sure there will be a lot of that to come. JetBlue should spin it to the doj that we’re gonna inject some yellow into this mofo and compete top to bottom not just the big 4 spin that they’ve been preaching. Then do whatever after the approval.

 

As been stated ULCC isn’t sustainable long term for a company as costs go up. Honestly unless you show up to an NK/F9 plane with one carry on item it’s not any cheaper than the 4. Experienced travelers know this and can work the system for cheap flights. Average Joe that travels once every 3 years is simply deferring up front legacy costs of a ticket to day of travel when they show up to airport with a checked bag and a carry on and personal item then get the sticker shock of the actual cost to travel.

Sure you’re removing a low cost from the market but unless you really know the game you’ll end up paying just as much if not more than a ticket on one of the three. Sure Avelo will be happy to gobble up the vacuum market share of “ULCC” NK will leave behind. If you still honestly believe this deal has no chance of DOJ approval you’re just naive.

 

Exactly it’s pretty clear that over 150 airplanes the ULCC model isn’t really viable. You can’t run bare bones support for that many airplanes and run a reliable operation or pay for support and run a profitable business. You can’t do both at this size or larger.

The DOJ can complain that JetBlue is removing a low cost carrier from the mix but if that carrier isn’t a viable business on its own it wouldn’t exist for a long term anyway
