I would be careful about any of the ALPA policies. ALPA is still trying to sell Spirit pilots a disability policy who's benefits would be negated by a policy that already exists also as part of your compensation. The Spirit policy will subtract anything you get from another source of income. Its a dirty trick.

If you enroll in the company's dental DMO plan, orthodontia is at least partially covered. I have a son who is going to need braces soon so I've just started looking into it. I know the DMO plan is a much bigger pain in the a**, like an HMO, but depending on how much it covers for braces, it may or may not be worth it. I haven't researched enough to figure that out yet though. I figured I'll look closer during open enrollment.

Im glad they finally fixed that. Geeze, it's 2014. Can't blame the company. I blame our R&I for never informing us of the problem.

Not entirely true. I have the ALPA short term and the Spirit provided long term does not consider the ALPA plan when calculating your disability value, as it's a 'self-paid' plan. You will receive both. Now that said, any other types of compensation you get, the Spirit plan will deduct....for example: state disability.

I was talking about the ALPA long term whose definition was just changed to finally remove the exemption.

Our long term disability is still a major joke. I needs to pay until age 65 and you should be able to do any other job that doesn't require a medical certificate without diluting your benefit
