Also nobody knows if the currently prevailing upgrade availability will still exist in 12 months.

speaking personally here, why is it so important to be a captain asap? Maybe you have 10,000hrs of command time in a C-5 or really like flying with your left hand, I dunno. 98% of our captains are phenomenal and being a (lineholding) FO here will be a great job if this AIP becomes contractual.

The quick-upgrade-for-the-money argument has to completely ignore both QOL and the benefits of lineholder FO seniority on earnings, especially when considering WB FO vs junior reserve NB CA.
I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from coming to UA, but coming to UA based on the opportunity to snag a quick upgrade in a historically senior base is setting up for disappointment. Maybe this environment still exists next year, but also, perhaps upgrade goes more senior and DEN gets more senior over the next year.

There are over 16,000 pilots at UAL, and every vacancy bid ends with CA vacancies. For the people that want to go to UAL with a first upgrade in mind, you have to ask yourself why there's 10,000 pilots in front of you bypassing that opportunity. Red flag?

A lot of people I know by pass the upgrade because they started on the narrowbody and want to enjoy the 756 then the 777/787 before being seat locked both by the company and then potentially the money (no one likes to go voluntarily left seat to right seat after a few years of the big bucks). And of course if you take the upgrade early you will constantly have people jumping on top of you. I have a few friends that did it but they were all single, or married with no kids etc and they are planning to use the huge boost in income on second year pay to make big inroads in their mortgage even at the expense of quality of life for a few years before downgrading to widebody.
