Two new hires fired?

For that matter, what reason does the company have to negotiate quickly when the issue will “resolve” itself in a couple more weeks?

The union can only prevent the company from doing things that are specifically prohibited in the CBA. If it isn’t prohibited, the company can do what they want. Perhaps vaccination mandates should be addressed in the next contract, but as for now, I haven’t found a clause prohibiting what the company is doing.

For whom should the union apply leverage? For some small subset of the <10% still not vaccinated? Not sure that’s how unions work.

Except that we are talking about pilots here. Dumb might not be the correct pejorative, over confidence and hubris tend to be what gets most of us in trouble.

It's 100%. The vaxed need compensation, time off, sick time, vaccine scheduling (if it's nofly for 2 days), and medical insurance guarantees. We also need limits on what can be mandated and when, and loss of medical to apply in case you become unvaxable.. This is ongoing.

Should the union spend money on that too?

Mandatory vaccines are a major change not covered in the current contract. While the company may not be able to mandate vaccines, they are required to schedule and pay pilots according to the contract. So if they want to pay us to sit at home, fine. They can do that. It's contractual.
This affects every pilot, including the most bold pro-vax guinea pig. Do you like money? Would you appreciate compensation for efforts on your days off? Like career and medical protections? Want limits on what may be required and who is allowed to approve or mandate it, and when? I can't imagine this is only 10%.
