I'm a new hire, got the offer last week! Ecstatic about it!

Hiring is robust, obviously, and most people I know (mil bros) are getting multiple calls. I think its musical airlines until you get an offer from the legacy, or freight, (or swa for some folks) that has a domicile where you want to live. Or perhaps they want something close to their reserve unit. I don't think many people are chasing the best pay.

Most of us doing the hiring process now at the airlines would say it is (by choice) DAL, UAL, and AA in that order. Based on company strength, future potential, junior line # growth, etc. I had an app in with DAL and AA, but United emailed me fairly quickly. I guess it depends on who asks you to the dance first. I still haven't heard from either of the other two yet. It was posted earlier, but if you get in with one of those three, I would hope over a career period you would be OK. But look at Eastern, Pan Am, TWA, etc. So in the end, it's a crap shoot at best probably. I wouldn't leave United to go to Delta or AA, though.

Butchf16,

I'm not sure if you are superstitious or not...but it's bad luck to say you are a new hire until you are actually sitting in class. I've seen strange things happen over the years with friends quitting their jobs too early when they thought they had a class date coming up.

All cyclical buddy. I got hired by CAL when United, AA and DAL were all bankrupt (and not hiring at the time I got hired). FedEx was my first choice, CAL second (and no desire to fly for SWA). DAL folks were wearing "keep Delta my Delta" pins when US Air almost bought out DAL in mid 2000s. You never can tell...one day number one, the next bottom of the barrel. I believe all will be a good choice in the end. The future is bright right now at any of the majors. SWA wouldn't be my number one choice strictly because of all the younger AirTran guys that will always be senior to you and there is no choice to upgrade to other aircraft with different route structures (other than a Capt of course).

As a relatively new hire with several offers and a lot of soul searching, spreadsheet building, and advice sought and received, the prime directive remains go with the first offer. But if a better offer comes in and that has got to be based on location that allows a live in base or have an easier commute then you have to carefully consider it. Finally every major and the two cargo Giants have pluses and minuses and those pluses and minuses can change in a month or a decade. In this environment some folks are going to change their mind. Not a bad thing. In the end I stayed for a base/QOL I wanted to live in over a possibility of a few extra dollars. Retirement percentages are about the same except at SWA and UPS.

Location, Location, Location.

Easy or no commute is a huge consideration. The hub being in a city where your family or spouse's family is great for QOL and may possibly be the number one priority for some.

It has been reported, but not publicly disseminated that United is concerned about the large number of pilot new hires resigning during training. Most of these pilots resigning are accepting positions at AA and DL.
Smart pilots.
