Did ALPA National impose the TA upon the ALK group? Not sure how that could work since ALPA is actually just an association, and not truly a union.

As someone not privy to the details....how did this go down? I thought ALPA national can only assist ALK MEC in preparing and perhaps selling a TA, but how can the "jam down a TA" that 80% are against despite the MEC?

This is correct in principle but I am aware anecdotally of a couple instances where National exercised some influence on regional contracts (one at mesa where National refused to sign it, don't recall the circumstances that gave National a vote on that, but I'm sure some mesa alumns do). Not saying the influence was a bad thing in those cases.

Straight from your Alaska MEC:
There have been a number of reports of well-meaning pilots offering solutions to management about a variety of issues arising from the effects of COVID-19—in some cases solutions beyond even what the Company has indicated it needs. It may seem counter intuitive but these actions actually make it more difficult for your MEC and Negotiating Committee to bargain in a way that helps and protects the pilot group. Public comments with ideas about solving problems, whether made directly to management or in some other forum like a web board, hinder your Negotiating Committee's ability to make the changes needed. Please feel free to continue communicating the problems you are experiencing with management but solutions should be communicated to your block reps so that we are in the strongest position to advocate on your behalf.

Ok, I love it. So everyone stop writing anything on these boards and the Union will be able to circumnavigate the furlough and the extremely negative financial pressures on our industry. Not a peep and we will be soon hiring thousands, making Delta plus 40%. Oh to just believe!
Dear Santa,
This year I have been really good, please bring me a real live pony for Christmas! I believe, I believe, I believe.
I will check back late July after the letters go out. You can be sure someone will be blamed for them. If we are lucky we will only lose 350-500 million this year... When airlines lose money, bad not good things happen!
Two things are affecting the union at the negotiating table, the virus and the economy. Nothing else!

I recognize the economy and CVIRUS are the drivers of the will of the company holistically, but unilateral “negotiating in public” does undermine the leadership’s basic and damn near always and forever strategy of “My MEC speaks for me and I tell them what to say.”

It’s just a figurative interpretation of events. We were offered meager pay improvements for the abolishment of the A plan and other concessions, shortly after we got sniped. Management thought they could broker a better relationship by trying to take even more advantage of us. Sadly a few short years later we gave up the A plan for? Oh that’s right nothing!
I did hear of at least one time where ALPA national refused to sign a contract (a regional, because they thought it was egregious) not because they were trying to force any pilots to work under lesser terms.
Best of luck to us all, but we will only get what our local reps (along with the assistance of ALPA National) are able to negotiate with our individual mgmts. They seem to provide perspective and allow sharing of industry knowledge so those local MEC's so they are negotiating from a place of knowledge vs hyperbole.
