Pilots do live in different places (countries). Outside of the occasional towel that may be thrown in the ring by scheduling or travel you are responsible for being in your gateway city.

With that being said, if your gateway is further ($$$) than where you plan to live it should be easy. Guys do it. It's possible and they like it but I have heard of a few horror stories out there.

Bottom line is that you are responsible for getting into position from your gateway or fiscal equivalent.

Bruin and Smurf, excellent job paying it forward and welcome aboard !

Shibuya - Atlas will consider your foreign experience a big plus. That said, they are also looking for pilots that will be a positive addition to a crew on a 12 hour + flight. Most of those who post here are already onboard with the team player concept, so you probably have a leg up there as well.

Good luck.

I would most likely live in the US. So i understand that for example if i lived in FL i would be responsible to get to ANC on my own if i was based in ANC?

No, the gateway basing program allows you to live anywhere in the United States. So living in florida they would travel you to ANC if you were based there. But if you lived in Japan you would have to get to ANC on your own, or another airport on our list of gateway airports (essentially any decent sized airports in the US), on your own and then they would travel you from there.

Thanks, that's the impression I had of how it works.

I'd plan on CVG, most likely, not ANC. Read back a ways to get spun up on Gateway travel. From Florida, plan on losing two off days getting to ANC, and one going home. Problem is, lots of lines have multiple trips in a single 30- or 60-day bid. You may lose a lot of off time in transit. CVG would be a lot less painful in that regard.

Thanks, that is what i gathered. FL was just an example, after 3 years in the ME I'm gonna live somewhere i LIKE! Austin TX, Nashville TN, a few places in Florida are all on the radar. IF i were to get on at Atlas i would spend the first few months in the midwest, then who knows. I want good QOL, inclusive of everything. CVG is initially convenient for some family nearby.

Anyone hired on to the 747 from here on out can expect to spend a very long time in ANC. On the 767, cvg is much more feasible.

Well, Atlas has its 2% as well. It sounds like you'd be a slam dunk.

As for the commute, think of someplace you could do a one hop to ANC if on the 74 and CVG if on the 76.
