777 CA Vacancy just filled this week. 10/2016 DOH
It went a bit more senior than the two recent 767 CA awards that were 1 year & 9 months.

No feedback yet on when window opens next

Why are they hiring? Is omni getting the DHL 777’s? This sounds like regional whipsaw 101.

They're getting at least one. The rumor I've heard is maybe more like three or four. My suspicion, with no evidence, is that they'll spread them out amongst ATSG (Omni), Atlas (Southern), and Kalitta, as you are quite right that whipsaw is the name of the game.

Heard classes on hold and evaluation.

I believe those 1 year and 9 month captains were management street captains. Average is 2.5 to 3 years.

IMHO, We're hiring because we were still turning away work... It seems they just never had the staffing to do it all. Now they're accepting/soliciting new flying we didn't used to do. We picked up a bunch of sport teams recently for example.

IMHO, There is likely no shortage of companies offering to fly cheaper, but it's getting to the point that completion factor will drive the contracts, and that requires staffing. Pilots are the new currency, and those with the staffing will get the work. It won't happen all at once, it won't happen fast, but it is happening.
