Here's one that's got me wondering. Pretty sure I need a call from a scheduler but want to compare notes before advising them.

SC on Monday 0530-1130. Monday at 1125 phone rings with CNO robocall awarding SC 0530-1130 for Tuesday morning. I ack the SC award. At 1131/Monday I revert to long call. No notification is made for a rest period prior to the SC RAP on Tuesday morning. Not even via CNO, let a alone a human scheduler.

My understanding is that a call placing rest via a human is required since I am in an on call status, correct?

Contractual rest periods do not require notification from scheduling. Any time you are assigned a rotation or SC, the PWA specifies that a reserve pilot is free from obligation to the company (in other words, in rest) immediately prior to report (18 hours for SC, 18-24 for a rotation depending on how far out it is awarded). The same rules apply on your last reserve day going into a golden X day or vacation day where contractually you are released from LC at 0600 or SC at 1200. No notification is required since you are suppoed to know the PWA and know that you automatically go into rest. On the other hand, going into a non-golden X day any rest assigned prior to LC ending at midnight requires a call from a scheduler. Or CQ, which generates 9 guaranteed hours of rest immediately afterwards.

So in effect, the only rest that scheduling is required to notify you of via a call from a live scheduler is rest not assiciated with any rotation, SC, or training. Or if they need to give you more than the PWA required rest leading up to an assignment in order to reset your 30/168.

Got it. Thanks. I see I was conflating different scenarios.

The rest is automatic due to the next short call assigned eventhough it coincides with the end of your current SC. This is the logic behind the 6 hour SC. You are going to get 18 hours free from duty per the PWA which is rest prior to the next SC. The timing works to keep you on the same SC start time every 24 hours.

Do reserves get more GFB calls? Since they assign trips 48 hours in advance, it has to be more common having sick calls with trips already assigned? I had to call in sick the other day after they assigned me my 6th short call in a row, so now I’m waiting to see if I get a call.

I’ve never heard of a GFB for calling in sick before a SC? I’ve done it a couple times.

as an aside (and it’s been discussed before) with the potential 48 hour reserve assignments, GFBs are especially stupid. If I’m sick I’m gonna wait until the night before to call in sick for a trip they assigned to me before a stretch of LC days. Maybe I’ll feel better the day before LC starts? But you gave me the trip 2 days out. I would be happy to do the assigned trip if I felt better but I already got it without an opportunity the day before reserve starts to call in sick. Do people bang out sick 2-5 days before a stretch of LC days starts?

as another aside, GFBs are stupid in general.

So in my journey to understand NC, i've come to the conslusion that the only point to utilizing NC is to potentially get a few extra dollars after they assign you a trip that is not permitted by the PWA. My second crew assist report that was closed, came back with "the departure time was after the first 2 hours so it was not a violation". So if anyone is thinking going NC will keep them from dropping a trip on you inside the first 2 hours, it really is a non-functioning provision as everyone in CS'ing interprets it differently than it's written. Not surprised either, just sayin'.
