What’s the average time range to respond to a GS? Are commuters able to get into position?

You’ll get a call for a GS anywhere from 24+ hours out to after the report time of the trip. Generally the more staffed a category is the less likely it is to have long notice as they have enough reserves to cover the trips in open time. Short notice stuff still pops up with some regularity (crew gets stuck somewhere, mx issues, etc, and of course a major driver is wx, primarily summer thunderstorms shutting down a hub for several hours). They may have some short call pilots available to cover last minute stuff, and regular pilots have first crack at any trip via WS before it gets to the GS step of coverage.

Every commute will have a different cutoff time. I’ve made GS trips just a couple of hours from report because I got called just in time to jump on a flight and I live very close to my commute airport. If you drive 60 minutes to your airport for a 1:45 flight you’re going to be much more limited.

On top of this, if you acknowledge the GS but do not accept it, a CS will call you. Then you can negotiate (positive space, I can’t be there until an hour after show). If they need you bad enough, they’ll take a deal that isn’t that out of the box.

Default Ultra Long Call Reserve

Hi everyone, I'm a new hire on reserve, and am wondering if any categories have ULC available? I see it as an option on PBS, and have read about it in the scheduling reference handbook/PBS reference handbook but does anyone know where to find if my category has ULC available for a given month? I put it in my bid on PBS and am hoping for a miracle but appreciate any insight you all have. Thanks!

ULC was designed during Covid. It'll likely never be used because we came out a lot faster than the company planned. Instead, we will likely be going to 18 hour LC if the contract passes.

You can see a note if any are being offered in the same place you download the bid packages, at the top. But like Breezy said, not likely. I don't think they have ever been offered and certainly not in the last year.
