I just saw there is an entire thread on this incident under Safety. Here's a post I copied that gives more detail:

Having been in there many times, I have seen some airplanes circle into 33, including a G5. However, I can tell you that you better be very familiar with every undulation of the terrain around there, and even then, the weather needs to be very VFR. The reason it's a circling approach is because of the descent rate required (greater than 400 ft/nm to from the FAF to the pavement). That doesn't preclude you from landing straight in, it's just the TERPS criteria. At my previous operator, we couldn't continue the approach past the FAF unless we had the field in sight due to the lack of performance in case of a missed approach.
Also, in order to depart on 15, you are supposed to sign a waiver and have it on file with the tower.

I guess if I were out of gas or on fire and that was the only pavement available I'd consider it....but what were these guys thinking? Was there an emergency or were they unaware of the winds? (no ATIS, tower closed, etc?)

Timbo, I got the two runways turned around...... (Long day yesterday and still recouping). The challenger has a 10 kt tailwind limitation. You land to the southeast and takeoff to the nnorthwest. Problem is you cant circle due to the
terrain

Looked like a bounce, a porpoise on to the nose and then launched back in the air, but then a rejected go around?

Or they landed and bounced when the tail wind was only 15, then got a 30kt gust during the bounce, instantly stalled and came right back down. Either way, very ugly! They had already done one go around. Why they came back for another try is beyond me.

Did they put anything out about the changes to the swap board or why?

Another new "feature" is you can no longer pull up rotation names.

Question for anyone who cares to chime...

My next 2 four man trips do not have 3 nights between them as required by far117. When should I bring this to scheduling's attention?
