The German sedans with their open differentials and ABS based traction control systems are just absolutely terrible. Not only do they get stuck, the brakes and rotors are smoking. Those things are probably 20% to 30% of the cars around here and about 90% of the types found in the ditch.

Subarus, F250's and for some reason Honda Oddessy Vans are unstoppable.

I live in Idaho and took drivers-ed when I was 14 in a Caprice that we had to chain up in to get through some of the driving days. Lived in Montana for a few years as well,. I've seen rain change to freezing rain coating everything in 1/4 inch of clear ice then dump snow on top of that. It's actually worse when it only covers the ice with about 1-2 inches. If it dumps 8-12 inches on top then you have plenty of traction to get around. I can throw snow cables ($29 at Autozone) on my Civic and drive through about anything.

lived in IAH for 6 years and would always venture out during the massive winter weather systems. Never saw anything that was even close to crap that we actually drove in during drivers-ed when I was 14 years old.

I can picture it. I was stuck at a hotel down the street from Lenox Square some years ago. Morning came and Peachtree Street was completely clogged with cars, no way for anything but bulldozer to get through. Took 2 days to begin to open things up.

So at about 1pm with every kid in school and every adult at work the abandon ship call went out and 4 million people seemed to hit the highway at the same time. Temps were below freezing and the snow was heavy and there are a lot of hills in Atlanta. Especially on the north side of the city headed to the mountains. I consider myself an excellent driver with plenty of snow experience and plenty of playing in the snow for fun experience, but if my 4x2 supercrew F-150 says screw you on a hill packed with other cars, I'm done.

I don't know how many cars in Atlanta are 4x4 but it ain't many. So throw that in the pot. Kids are sleeping in schools and right now there are buses stuck all over, it's a disaster.

Also, fwiw, we know of a proud New Jersey guy who runs a business of about 400 people and his attitude was don't worry, it's nothing, seen worse. At 2, okay fine go home people, quit complaining. I bet a sizable percentage of those people aren't home and if they are, many probably don't have their cars.
