Saw a bunch of these up at KOSC while on vacation this summer. Pretty sad as most looked like they would never fly again (doors left open, engines off, etc.). It looked like they were finishing up a pax 747-200 in the old bowling shoe paint job to service.

Snake Smith didn't, Harry Alger didn't, Dave Bushy didn't, Joe Kolshack didn't, and I doubt Steve Dickson ever will.

Most of the above, even before they crossed over to the dark side, didn't fly very much when they were 'line pilots'. They were much more interested (or felt more comfortable?) in an office job than a cockpit. I only took this job so I'd NEVER have to work in a room with no windows, but these guys seem to love it.
.............?

I sought this job for the same reason as you and have never regretted it, but why do you demean those that wanted to follow a different path?

Not demeaning them at all. Just think at some point they should have to choose their allegiance, not having the best of both worlds for a career. Imho, term limits in any off line positions are needed. Both mgmt. and union. I am glad that line pilots aspire to these jobs and Alpa jobs. Better than a non-pilot.

There is no shortage of 4th floor wannabee's, that's for sure, but very few ever return to fly the line.

Oh, same goes for some ALPA lifer's. Once they get used to making twice what they ever could on the line, and never having to fly an all nighter into a blizzard, with weekends and Christmas off, well, life is good, why would you want to give that up?

Dave Bushy returned to the line after he was fired as the VP of flight ops. He remained a line pilot until he accepted the VP job at JetBlue.

And smoking Joe really never was a line pilot.

I hope the Senior VP of Flight Ops never returns to the line. I have respect for him and what he has done at Delta. Extremely smart man and will listen to what you have to say. I do believe he graduated #1 at the Air Force Academy and his roomate was #2. It was the first time in AFA history that the #1 and #2 graduates were pilots. He also graduated #1 at Georgia Tech law school. I hope he becomes President of Delta Air Lines.

Well, not to brag or anything but my high school started with 540 students in 9th grade and we graduated 180.

I was one of the 180.

By the way, the pregnancy rate in my 10th grade year was supposedly 30% of the females in our class although I think it was lower but definitely not single digit %. We actually had a full time child day care center for the students kids.
