As of now the junior equipment on the West coast (LAX) is the 737. At the present hiring pace it could be 6 months to 2 years to get to LAX as a new-hire on the 737.
The 320 will get you to SLC in a similar amount of time and the 88 only gets you as far west as MSP.
717 will get you DTW or ATL ASAP but no further west.
If I were in your situation I would hope for the 737. If I could not get that I would try for the 320. The SOCAL to SLC commute is pretty easy.
YMMV.
Good Luck

I agree with the above. 737 first and foremost. If and only if SLC 320 would be a massive improvement for you (check out commutes and trips before you bid) then 320. However unless it was awesome I'd stick with 737 and tread water until you could hold LA. I agree with the 6 months to 2 years timeframe. If hiring keeps up at this rate, it could easily be a year or less I'd guess.

I see that pic and I immediately think -- wear a helmet!
The 320 is probably popular with newhires because it's a fairly good compromise between the fast movement but utter discomfort of flying an 88 (brutal trips), and the slow movement and utter discomfort of flying a 737 (brutal cockpit*).
* My favorite 737 quip: 2 guys in a phonebooth in a hurricane doing what 3 guys used to do in the 727.

You should plan on commuting your 1st year. Given this, I would take what I can hold a line on soonest and best commutable line soonest. Easy choice, the mighty Mad Dog!
You have a 1 year seat freeze. Leave a LA 737 bid in the system and when you can get it, you will.
Best of luck.

I think that SLC B737/A320 commute would be much more doable than the Midwest or ATL MD88 route, especially from SOCAL. I'm still obviously very green about all of this, so I appreciate everyone's opinion. Thanks!

United! Ok, kind of kidding. Delta is a east coast airline and always has been. You should be able to get to LAX fairly soon on the 737.

- Much more comfortable than the 737
- The 737, MD88 and 717 fleets have been growing. The growth results in junior pilots bidding into the vacancies
My 112 pound wife went flying with me. As she sat in the Captain's seat she said "how do you guys fit in this thing" ... and she drives a Miata, wants a Lotus Elise ... she likes little cockpits ... hey wait! that's not how that was supposed to come out
