Another question from a newby, You're on reserve at a location other then where you live, if you're not flying, where do you hang out? Are their crew lounges or are you hanging out at the gates? I know many have spoke about crash pads. Is this the only way to survive commuting? Moving isn't an option. Serious question. I've flown 25 years for pay, just have no knowledge of this side of the industry. Thanks in advance.

You might, MIGHT, be able to get by without crash pad. Depends on where you commute from, flight schedules, and Jumpseat demands on those flights. If there is a combination of any of those being a problem, then crash pad would be better than getting by with company provides hotels. Difference is maybe saving $200-300 a month.

Depends on where you're commuting to. DFW for instance, it's pretty rare that rsv commuters mess with a crashpad these days. Between actually flying trips, company provided commuter hotels, and $35ish hotel rooms, you can get by without a crashpad. But places like NY I'd imagine it'd be tough to get by without one.

Red roof Inn NNE of DFW was my go to for ultra cheap previously. They had a shuttle van and plenty of half decent food within a miles walk. That was five years ago....though.
