That's funny, I didn't think we had even started talking about pay rates yet! Amazing what guys... "know".

Not sure how that fits into talking points from F&H? ... but i can guarantee it came from them.

I personally dislike those too, but you have the option to not answer the phone.

Disclosure: I don't do either. My home time is paramount. Just trying to understand which is more helpful and why.
Under one point of view you are right. But beside the fact you can avoid a VDA, when they assign RSA there are definitely open pairings.
We should not pick up either.
As a matter of fact we should start a self awareness campaign.

"Friends don't let friends pick up RSAs"

Ok, ALPA cannot ban them. But we can make sure our fellow pilots understand the importance of getting into negotiation with leverage.
Being proactive rather than reactive.
It's not just to make a point, but it's for a better future.
Don't make the extra dollar today, get a better pay tomorrow.
Look at it as an investment.

I'm getting tired of this don't pick up drivel. Even airlines with a CBA have provisions in it for picking up extra work for more pay. Guess what, ours will too. One of the great things about our airline is the access to open time, swaps, drops, pickups, rsa and vda. Flexibility is a good thing. It's good for the qol pilot who wants to drop to minimum and its good for the high earners who want to max their pay and everyone in between. Suggesting that no one should take advantage of what is offered to EVERYONE only serves to make more people unhappy. It's not selfish, just as it won't be selfish for pilots to do whatever is available in the CBA when we get one.

And I am tired of people missing the big picture.
The problem that picking up during negotiations gives our leverage away. Nobody is saying that once a good CBA it's reached you shouldn't pick up. But in every airline with good CBAs there were black outs of picking up during negotiations.
Our pick up system it's wrong anyway. No premium for regular open time, reserve pilots that pick up on they off don't go above guarantee, VDA at 150% instead of 200%. And all this just keeps us understaffed.
If you can't understand that by not picking up now, you will have a better contract soon, you should reconsider your career choice.

Every airline with good CBA's there were blackouts? Huh?

Not sure if that's what happened at Southwest.....The big 3 pilot groups all benefited from CBA's where the companies were busy trying to merge the groups and get joint contracts...in other words to avoid a US Air scenario.

If the company was negotiating in good faith I'd probably agree with you. It's been 2 years and we only have 30% of a TA, so it looks like they are dragging this out letting inflation cut our pay for them. If no one picked up RSA or VDAS they would have to cancel flights for staffing. This is leverage and might motivate them to stop low balling our MEC.

How many contracts negotiations have you been through? Also where do you get the 30%?

Aren't VDA's 190%?
