Don't forget Delta locked themselves into contracts with the non wholly owned carriers that require X amount of flying. The wholly owns will always get the slim pickin's until they can get out from those contracts.
Just an example, Freedom had "X" amount of flying when Delta yanked the 50 seat contract. When the judge demanded they be given the flying back at its original level, Delta had already cut a bunch of domestic capacity and in order to get Freedom back to the original numbers, guess who had to take the hit for it? Comair.

Many things go into a decision to award flying. Delta is trying to shift some flying back to the mainline. They are reducing the overall number of connection aircraft. From a pilot standpoint losing 2 50 seaters to one 90 seater is a bad deal. Jobs are lost. From a management standpoint its the plan for the future. Performance is still the key factor in who long term gets the flying. The one airline that has really made out well in this has always done a good job. One thing Delta tracks is the number of passengers a airline causes to misconnect. This is a key stat. A misconnect is very very expensive to the airline. ASA was last in this statistic prior to their sale and Comair was a close runner up. If Comair had been the top performing regionial in the Delta system the last 4 years the fleet makeup and size would be very different there. Delta would have also benefited since they own Comair and the value of their asset would have been way up. They would prefer to award the flying to Comair. They can't afford to do it if they are not going to get the passenger to their connecting flights.
Also the prior post reflecting JFK is spot on. When you have 40% or so of your flying coming out of the worst on-time airport in the country, (maybe the world) of course nubers are going to stink. Not only do we fly out of JFK as a base, but we also are the predominant regional in the Northeast. PHL, LGA, EWR, BOS, DCA, and IAD are not known for their efficiencies.
Maybe you can explain to me how a misconnecting pax is soooo expensive to DAL? I'm not saying it's a good thing at all, but I just don't see the "large" expense?

If Delta was really concerned with misconnected passengers, they'd put money into fixing their terminal situation at JFK. Granted, in this economy, that might be tough to do.
Does anyone really think its going to get better in the summer when Delta starts Terminal 4 operations and now passengers will have 3 separate terminals to transit between flights?

I agree that's why ASA got the planes. But of course, Comair has been giving away 50 seaters with nothing in return for a year now. Heck, we gave away enough 50 seaters to match ASA, but then you got to add in the twist and that is where does big Daddy D want the planes. He wants them in Atlanta and we are stuck in CVG and JFK.
Just do the simple math... with two gates and allowing 20 minutes to board a flight, JFK can, on paper, efficiently load six planes an hour.
So when you look at the departures board and see the following: Detroit-4:30, Buffalo-4:35, DCA-4:40, Tampa-4:45, Cincy-4:50, you know Cincy won't really board until well after scheduled departure.
Same thing with the fence at LGA.

Gates 23/25 at JFK are a d-bortion (that's 3 steps below an abortion). To have 22 aircraft parked at two gates is asking for a trainwreck every day.

Gate 23/25 really has an extremely simple solution. Run it like they did concourse C. Build a wall 5 feet out from the current wall and throw 4 doors on each gate 23 and 25. 23a.b.c.d. Each one with a gate agent still leads down the same 1 jet bridge but now capable of actually boarding 4 separate a/c in an orderly manner.
So now I have just one question. Where can I sign myself up for an ovation?
