You add your dependants on NRTP and list from there. Once you guys get in and get to use NRTP it will be more clear. But yes the short answer is you just click first class box and you will be upgraded automatically if there is a First seat open. It's harder on hub to hub flights but outstations are nice. You can also choose AC that has more first class seats available. I rode FC last two times I non revved. PHL has direct flights to many desirable International destinations as well. You will love the travel bennies.

Protip for non rev travel: set an alarm for 24 hours and 1 minute prior to your flights departure time, and when that alarm goes off sign in to NRTP and mash the check in button until it checks you in. #1 D2 on the list every time!

Sorry, didn't intend for that to come off as smart…deft ask all you want, will try to help as much as possible. I'm a commuter and a frequent traveler for fun as well. American travel benifits are great!

We also get two positive seat tickets to anyone on property Before July 2017 to anywhere American flies.
And you get 6 D1 priority per year which is highest priority. So even if you check in late you go above all D2's. And if you travel with your parents (D2P) they automatically get bumped to D2 priority.

To add to the above, I learned recently that if you are D1, that does nothing for the parental units, so if you are traveling with them, stay D2, otherwise they won't move up in priority and make reservation under one PNR!
re: listing for coach and then asking to be seated in F at the gate. Doing this is generally frowned upon and I believe the nonrev travel guide tells you not to do it anyways. It creates extra work for the gate agents, whom can be very busy at the point in time that they're typically clearing nonrevs. They may just tell you 'no' or not be very warm about the idea since they know it's not really supposed to be done. With that said, if the flight is wide open and the agent isn't apparently busy and you're a smooth talker, hey, go for it, you never know.
A little bit of coffee or candy flavored wheel grease never hurts, either.

Spot on…the most important thing to remember about non rev or commuting, the gate agent rules your world. He or she can ruin or help your day. If you feel like you are going to loose your cool, walk away, try a different flight. It would make their day to report a ****ed off pilot and make you loose your travel bennies!!!

Exactly how "loose" would these travel bennies be?

They may offer you an earlier class and more money to fly the Dash, but if you're going to commute, the jet is really going to be where the movement (i.e. QOL) is. Unless you're willing to move to/close to base, then take the cash!
