So... here's my problem with the rule... It's a pyramid scheme. The first CFI's at the top, instruct 10 students all the way through and get their 1500 hrs... second set of CFIs need to find 10 more students to instruct all the way through to get their 1500 hrs... etc.. do the math and you soon realize that it is a pyramid scheme. Yes, some people will earn privates and maybe instruments that aren't looking to go all the way through to CFI and make a career out of things, but with Avgas approaching insane prices, it's just going to be difficult to get enough students to get everybody to 1500. Regional pay going up as a result.. that's not exactly in the business model, and god forbid ticket prices go up to pay for it, so we'll see what happens there, but flight schools are going to have so many CFI candidates they may start charging to be a CFI there... Somebody who wants to get ahead and has SJS may be willing to pay just to instruct for a year.
I realize people think this rule will be a good thing for regional life/pay, and maybe it will be, but remember there are always unintended consequences with any legislation. If it really does cause a shortage, rather than raise pay, they'll hire anybody who comes along with 1500 hrs and an ATP- even if that person won't be pleasant to work with, is unsafe, etc - they need pilots. And if they can't get new FOs, no growth or captain upgrades. This is happening either way - just playing devil's advocate.
In other words, spend less time trying to get around the legislation, and making things easier for "you", and more time getting one of those CFI jobs now. There are tons available at the present time, and if the predictions here come to pass, those will be full very soon. My advice if you really love this profession is to get that job now, get that valuable experience and make yourself the best FO candidate you can. Be Proactive instead of Reactive.... just my 2 cents

Andrew,

Your lack of responses to your own thread speaks VOLUMES as to why your idea is galactically wrong and why you don't yet belong in a 121 cockpit. The petition was a poor decision. You need to learn to make better ones.

Andrew, I have a friend going to Copa Airlines in Panama soon. You could work there with 250 hours. You would have a nice looking resume when you have enough time for a part 121 in the USA.
No, Copa will hire locals only with 250 hours.
For expats, it's 1000 hours. This is coming from the copa website.

Going back to the original petition.
Andrew, what are you trying to accomplish exactly?
Even though I am not close to the 1500 hours yet, I support the new law. Actually it encourages me to move forward because it actually gives me hope that the future may shape better than the past 10 years for Airline Pilots.
The only thing I would change is make it 1500 hours for everyone and remove that "frozen" ATPL concept (and maybe add a College degree, even though this is a requirement at many airlines).

20 years ago, you "paid your dues" by sucking it up at a ****ty regional, so one day, you'd make it to mainline. Today, you suck it up at a ****ty regional, to get get stuck at a ****ty regional. Pay your dues? Ha! Now, experience on the other hand...

You are right. My bad. What about the ATP thing. Are regional airlines gearing up to start getting their FO's trained for ATP certificates?

Well lookee what happened....the hiring boom of 2006-08... I had the opportunity to go to a crappy regional asap or go home and CFI more (had been CFIing for two years at the time). Impatient me jumped at the chance to ski on the water.....in retrospect I should have gone home and enjoyed the In-N-Out and sun.

Two furloughs later and here my black ass sits....in LA....CFI-ing (well the first furlough...not the second.....so far....) waiting for SKW to tell me I'm good enough.

Moral of the story...do it right the first time kid.

For-Shizzle.
Dude. Awesome. I'll take my CFI job or as long as I need to; I enjoy it. I'll hit the ATP mins at some point! Probably sooner than I think, too.

I used to read that statement and think it was a slight exaggeration. I made a TON more money as a CFI.

I made a little more CFI'ing, and three times as much doing 135 charter. And actually felt like the companies enjoyed having me around.

Leaving 135 to come here was the biggest mistake I've made in my short career.

I can relate to your post. It was nice being a name, a person, not an employee number with a level of seniority dictating my QOL. Charter and CFIing dropped off where I was at, and pretty much had to look for a new home. (And I got help from forum members-thank you!)
