What happened to giving it a rest?

Someone gave me a peek at the expressjet pilot forums today. The difference in the vibe over there speaks volumes.

Hey folks, I'm married and also have an enrolled friend. Can someone explain how imputed income works? Thanks.

Every time your enrolled friend flys a fare is calculated based on the "value" of that flight and sent to payroll, that "value" is then added to your taxable income line of your paycheck and you are essentially paying income tax on that flight.

Example...

LAX-ORD-LAX = $400 "value", add that to your taxable income column and pay income tax on it, 10% bracket? That trip will cost you $40. 15%? $60, FO with children? If you pay no income tax, pay nothing!

Do I pay during tax time or is it deducted from my paycheck? Yes, I have children. Does this apply to family or just the enrolled friend?

You will see it show up under income so it goes in your gross income. Then the deduct it after tax. It happens a couple pay checks after the travel.

I had a trip that was $150. They put the trip in my earnings for the two week period so it looked like I made that much more. Then they take taxes and all the good stuff out and the $150 they put in there.

How much we're you taxed on the $150 & does this apply to everyone on my travel list (wife, child) or just my enrolled friend?

Yo-Nited, if you have an enrolled friend. Spouses, children and parents are not subject to Imputed Income rules. I believe USAirways does this as well.

How much you pay in tax is entirely based on what tax bracket you fall under. You are only taxed on your enrolled friends travel, not yours or your family.

It is payroll deducted in the form of income taxes withheld.

Lets say you earned $2,000 for the paycheck, your secret girlfirend i.e. *enrolled friend* flew to Omaha for a overnight rendezvous with you a few weeks back - Yonited calculates a fare value lets say $200 - which the IRS says Hey! That's a taxable benefit! - So that "value" is represented as "imputed income" on your paycheck - NOW your paycheck says you earned $2,200 and your taxed on that $2,200 according to your with holdings, exemptions, etc....get it
