It was funny.

Plenty of pilots out there that don’t come close to understanding good subtle humor or sarcasm.

Serenity now.

Any word on how many have been getting hired? Class sized?

Curious if Southwest has really started hiring yet.

Kind of? Very beginning.

120'sh in Dec, 50'ish in Jan, 18 in Feb, 155 in March...it's all over the place. They're saying 1400-1500 this year, most doubt this will happen. We STILL have existing pilots on paid leave. Recently a group was sent home from equal training due to instructor availability. Severe mismanagement of our manning would be an understatement.

Why do you still have pilots on paid leave? Every other airline that did it has brought them back. Didn't they have a mechanism to force an early return?

It's not because they don't want them back or can't force them back. It's a failure of leadership. They chose ETOPS growth over EXTO requal training last spring. Now COVID is ripping its way through the training center so they sent some of the (maybe all?) EXTO requals home.

Ah, now I find all this very interesting since the whole idea of the program was to bring them back quickly and allow for capture of market share. Guess it looked good on paper.

Well on paper that was the plan. Idiots at home in jammies failed to execute that plan. They were still offering leave last Spring when everyone else was bringing people back and ramping up hiring.

They used the excuse, “nobody saw the demand coming”. Uh…leave your house and you would’ve. 3 rounds of stimmy money left people with a mountain of cash and cancelled vacations they wanted to retake.

Far as I’m concerned…anyone in charge over the last year should be fired for gross incompetence

It looked good on paper except for the part where they allowed those on leave to fall out of currency and they fully didn't anticipate the lead time needed to get instructors up to speed or the competitive market in Dallas for those instructors. Now they have lost 3 instructors (died) from covid since Mid September and who knows how many others out sick and here we are. CEO is gone, COO needs to go, and anyone else in on those decisions needs to be reconsidered. But they're "laser focused"...
