What's up with Capt's that 'guard' the rudder trim during TO roll? If you lose an engine you prob need that hand to apply TOGA power. Trimming should be the least of your worries at that point, how about fly the plane first? I don't get it

I don't know. I've seen FOs do it. When I asked why, the answer was "I have nothing better to do with that hand". The capt. however should have that hand on the throttles at that point.

The Captain in question was probably taught the technique as an FO (during one of the numerous procedure re-do's we've suffered as management came and went) and never unlearned it. It's not standard.

Questions RE Reserve:
I understand the basics, its line bidding for a specific RAP for the month, 12/13 days off not including conflicts... But I have a few specific questions...
How long do they wait to assign open time flying to reserves (Noon the previous day for example??)
If you are awarded an R3 for the month (on call 3am-5pm), are you stuck commuting in the day prior for the entire month, or are you able to make a deal with scheduling to move up your initial callout time on the first day, making it commutable?
Can someone sitting reserve pickup opentime (within 24-48hrs of show time)? I understand you can preference a trip but Im wondering if you can actually pick something out of the pot
Are you able to get an early release on any particular day if you call scheduling and there is enough coverage?
For line holders, can you do partial adds/drops (drop the first turn of your pairing to make the trip commutable for example) if the reserve grid is green? Is there any way to add/drop partial pairings?
Any other advice or specific info about reserve life would be helpfull, thanks!

.....but I've flown several times with a CA that trims on initial climb, ***, he also takes off with his hand on the trim knob immediately after I call v1.
-I've asked him if he trims the sim during normal TOs-
-He said- it's a simulator it doesn't need it!!!-
Lol.
Weird pips out there.

That technique was apparently taught sometime in the recent past. A year or two ago, a check airman was including a generic admonition against the practice in his general line check debrief. aka, the training department "hot topics".
The Captain in question was probably taught the technique as an FO (during one of the numerous procedure re-do's we've suffered as management came and went) and never unlearned it. It's not standard.

I want ALPA to cancel the monthly magazine and pay for my KCM, it would be a benefit for me.
